Georgia Police Left Two Teenagers In A Holding Cell With No Lights Or Food For An Entire Weekend

Two Georgia teenagers were left in a county courthouse holding cell from Friday to Monday with no food, lights, or toilet paper, Dave Huddleston WSB Atlanta reports.

"I’m embarrassed today as I can possibly be,” Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller told reporters.

The teenage boys, ages 16 and 17, had court appearances on Friday, and were locked in the holding cell after neither of their parents showed up.

“Nobody that works in security is supposed to leave that building at night without checking the cells, and it’s not a hard job to do," Miller said, adding that eight to 10 officers were involved may lose their jobs once he completes the internal investigation.

And those two little juveniles? They're gonna be rich little juveniles, if all goes well for them.

We shouldn't encourage them to milk the system. Having something bad (but relatively minor) happen as a result of State incompetence shouldn't be akin to winning the lottery.

Give the young men scholarships to the State University of their choice, fire or reprimand the deputy responsible, and be done with it.

If they think locking kids up for over 48 hours w/o food and water is tantamount to torture or serious trauma, than they'll fork over a large amount.

Personally, I think a Very Large Amount is appropriate--far more than a lousy "scholarship to a state university." Why? Because when you hit incompetent assholes in the wallet, they tend to become less incompetent. The community that hired these nitwits needs to get better at hiring--raise their standards, pay for professionalism, or keep paying for fuckups like this.

At least there were two of them. If it was only one teenager, he might have gone mad.

I agree that the deputies/jailers who were in charge of that cell need to be fired. I'm not certain the sheriff can be fired for this because it's an elected position. There may be a system for a recall vote.

Especially if the kids are minorities.

Get out of the cities, and it's still 1865 out here.

Of course I don't know much about Georgia. I don't know what those boys did to get them in that holding cell, and if they did something wrong, they should be held accountable. But getting left in 'the hole' is a separate thing entirely. They deserve a monetary settlement, but I would be pleased if they didn't get it all at once. Teenagers everywhere are liable to blow through money rapidly given the right circumstances.

They were held for 72 hours without food, water or a toilet.

Do you get how bad that is?

These were CHILDREN.

A college scholarship won't reimburse for the psychological trauma inflicted there in, NOR for the penalty the state should endure to ensure nobody ever suffers this again.

I think the parents should be hauled before a judge to explain.

The sheriff would have a lot more than embarrassment to be concerned with.

they deserve a day in court and humane treatment until they appear in court. No food or water for 72 hours in the dark is the essence of inhumane and criminal treatment - especially to minors.
