Son of American Atheists founder attacks his slain mother and praises Russia’s anti-LGBT laws

William J. Murray — the conservative Christian activist son of American Atheists founder Madalyn Murray O’Hair — penned a column at conspiracy website and “Birther” hub World Net Daily on Monday in which he simultaneously attacked his late mother as a lazy, anti-American communist sympathizer and praised Vladimir Putin’s Russia as a bastion of free enterprise economics and Christian values.

Right Wing Watch reported that Murray went so far as to claim that Christian Americans are fleeing the U.S. for a better life in Russia, away from the “scourge” of LGBT rights.

“My mother was not intellectually an atheist; she was a Marxist, and that Marxism did not come about from rigorous study, but rather from unemployment,” Murray wrote, claiming that he was raised in “a Marxist home where the vodka did flow and America, free enterprise and God were despised.”

He went on, “Having been a part of the decline in religion and morality that has come to America, I now look at Russia where individual achievement is honored and prayer and Bible instruction are welcomed in the classrooms.”

1. His mother was funny, but she could also be an extremely unpleasant woman at times

It's just a shame he didn't manage to grow past that and is spending his life in spite, vehemently against anything he suspects his mother might have been in favor of.

Yes, I'd rather see him than be him.

I can tell you that, having a J.D. myself.

Madalyn Murray O'Hair graduated from South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas, in 1952. I graduated from that school, which produces excellent trial attorneys, many years later.

William Murray abandoned his daughter, Robin, and the other son, Jon, and Madalyn had to raise her. Maybe if he had stood by her, she wouldn't have been murdered by the handyman as well as her uncle and grandmother. The Austin cops were not real hot on the trail of finding out what happened when they were murdered.

Madalyn Murray O'Hair had a lot of courage. I saw her on TV once and someone called in attacking her patriotism. She informed them she served proudly in WWII in the Signal Corps. They also said they would pray for her, and she didn't appreciate that because she didn't think it did any good. She was honest and blunt, and the first outspoken atheist I ever saw.

Christians who swear that there is a correlation between lack of prayer in schools (partly because of Mrs. O'Hair's court case against Bible reading in public schools, Murray v. Curlett) and the so-called "decline in morals" have a problem with correlation and causation. No relationship there. She was busy enforcing the separation of church and state that many Christians do not understand or do not want to understand, because they want a Christian theocracy.

If William thinks Russia is a free society, he is quite misinformed. There is also a serious wealth disparity there.

Outspoken women are vilified in this society, atheist or not.

I would say Russia really is the in place for extremist fundamental Christians. Maybe I could start a travel agency devoted to that clientèle... one way.

move there. One less willfully ignorant gasbagin America would be a good thing. And since when has Putin "embraced Christianity"? All I see is a bigoted tyrant. And he goes shirtless and acts muy, muy macho way too much. Overcompensating just a little, eh, Vlad? Russia has Christian values?!? OMFG. In the immortal words of Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon."

It's so easy to apply projection to the dead.

Bravo Billy, you're so far above your neurotic impulses. As an added bonus, you've found a way to easily project your guilt without the fuss and hubbub of counter defensive actions by mom. Very brave of you and a great way to gather a fine love offering from your congregation too!

we are overpopulated as it is and I'm sure the country of their heart's desire will be a utopia on earth for them.

So go!

We could use the space.

Someone will be along shortly to fill your position in this dying capitalist aristocracy.

I guarantee it.
