Fewer Americans support U.S. withdrawal from Iraq: poll

WASHINGTON, June 25 (Xinhua) -- While U.S. President Barack Obama had overwhelming public backing when he pulled U.S. forces out of Iraq in 2011, support for that decision now has dropped 14 points, a Gallup poll released Wednesday found.

The June 20-21 poll comes amid turmoil in Iraq, as fighters from the Sunni group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) are reportedly beheading victims in a bid to instill fear as they sweep through the country's north .

In response to the threat of attacking the capital city of Baghdad, Obama has sent 275 military troops to help secure the U.S. embassy in Iraq and 300 military advisors to assist the Iraqi government.

While the majority of Americans still back the 2011 decision to leave Iraq and 57 percent believe the war was a mistake, the move is being heavily scrutinized in light of the current situation, the poll found.

All three partisan groups - Republicans, independents and Democrats - are less likely to back the withdrawal now as they were in 2011. Independents showed the greatest change in opinion, with approval falling by 18 points. Approval among Democrats and Republicans also decreased significantly, by nine and 10 points respectively, Gallup found.

for however long we stayed. It was a boondoggle from the beginning. The only reason to stay is to protect the oil interests of a few corporations that want us to give them free protection for the oil they have stolen.

The Obama adminstration tried to extend it, but Iraq refused to idemnify our contractors (including mercenaries) against things like their rapes and murders if they stayed. Since the US requires that, we left on the date Bush negotiated.

I've been posting that since I've been here, every time I see someone claim Obama ended the war in Iraq. Maybe now that Republicans, including Cheney, are criticizing him for leaving, someone here will finally believe me. Or google it.

That's the problem with ignoring inconvenient facts. Sometimes, the truth may turn out to be more convenient for you.
