Coulter Trolls US Soccer Fans: Growing Interest Shows 'National Decay'

CATHERINE THOMPSON – JUNE 26, 2014, 10:33 AM EDT

-snip-

After cautioning that she'd held off from writing about the beautiful game so as "not to offend anyone," the conservative pundit dedicated her syndicated column to a rambling, point-by-point explanation of how "any growing interest in soccer can only be a sign of the nation's moral decay."

Coulter cited some predictable criticisms, arguing that "individual achievement" is barely a factor in the sport and that "it's foreign." But she also laid out a few wackier gripes. Coulter took issue with the fact that a soccer player can't use his or her hands in play, then made a bizarre comparison between the sport and the metric system that invoked the French Revolution and the guillotine. Basically, she argued that liberals' adoration for soccer and the metric system runs deep because they're both "European."

Not one to leave any box unticked, Coulter even touched on immigration in the column's kicker:

If more "Americans" are watching soccer today, it's only because of the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy's 1965 immigration law. I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time.

It's worth noting that aside from the Olympics, the World Cup is really the only occasion when an American audience gets a chance to cheer on a national -- rather than a regional -- sports team. But apparently that doesn't jibe with Coulter's vision of patriotism.

Soccer is putting up great numbers in bad time slots. It is here, it is growing, and it doesn't give a crap who your grandfather is.

Fox news would kill for soccer's ratings demographic.

It's also a way of pointing up the fact that in America, we crown seasonal winning teams as 'world champions' of sports that the rest of the countries in the world don't play: American football, baseball, etc.

Of course, other countries do play those sports to a certain extent. Canada plays 'wear-a-helmet-and-smash-into-each-other' football, and Cubans, among others, play baseball, but no non-American teams ever get invited to the World Series or the Superbowl.

Who cares what the rest of the world thinks? /sarcasm

I've been watching the WC since 1986. Yes, I enjoy it, but also a little bit out of rebellion against mainstream American sports. (I realized last night my DVR isn't working properly, pulled out the VCR and hooked it up for that important match that starts in two minutes).

And next month, I'll be glued to the Tour de France. Those damn Frenchies!

... all but the "sport" of right-wing-dumb-fuckery.

Even gun sports.

I have a sister, a firefighter and paramedic, who was on a women's soccer team that regularly humiliated all-male teams. She still plays "old lady" soccer (in her words) and she coaches young kids too.

What women lack in testosterone-bulked-out-muscle they make up for in teamwork, endurance, and determination.

Sadly, this patriarchal international society is not ready for that, not ready for a world where all of us are allowed to shine brightly, wherever we find our own personal talents.

I once had a girlfriend who is a brilliant engineer. She had to fight harder than any man for her place in our society.

Same with my wife.

Twice the work and talent for much less than twice the pay and respect.

with the exception of basketball, soccer is the only other sport that is truly played world wide. Soccer like hockey has always had a niche following in the US because the game simply does not have enough scoring and many people fail to recognize the true athletic ability of the athletes that play the sport. in many countries soccer or football as they call it is the only sport that people play. The US is unique because we are able to support 5 professional sports leagues whereas most countries can only support one league. Coulter is just trying to be relevant but if she had any true understanding of the game she would realize just how far the National Team has come. She is just showing her anti immigration colors. I will root for team USA and I hope they make the knockout round.

1. There is individual achievement: Goals are scored by one player delivering the right shot. The overall game is determined by which team delivers more accurate passes and wins more one-on-one duels.

2. Soccer requires athletic prowess: You have to be fast, you need stamina, you need agile feet, you have to jump really high.

3. There are boring 0:0 soccer-games and there are pure nail-biters where teams attack and defend tooth-and-nail.

4. Soccer is not about physically hurting the enemy. (Shocker!) That's why injuries are less serious and less frequent in soccer. And there is humiliation when an opposing player steals your ball or penetrates your team's defensive line.

5. You cannot use your hands in Tennis or Golf either. Different "games" have different "rules".

6. "No, soccer is not catching on in the US!"

7. "To repeat: Soccer is not catching on in the US!"

8. If every thumb had the same broadness, if every foot had the same length, if every belt had the same length, then we still would need the metric system because it doesn't depend on memorizing weird ratios between different units of length. And what exactly does this have to do with soccer???

9. "I mean, seriously: Soccer is not catching on in the US!"

It was a big celebration of the US soccer team's advancement after today's game with Germany. And most of the celebrants were clearly Caucasian.

Hope that ruins your day.....

it seems soccer has been in the us for quite some time! even back in the Pilgrims time

1620
"American folklore asserts that Pilgrim Fathers, upon settling at Plymouth Rock found American Indians along the Massachusetts coast playing a form of soccer. The Indians called it “Pasuckquakkohowog,” which means “they gather to play football.”

I heard Hannity on the radio the other day, going on and on about how he couldn't understand why soccer was becoming so popular in the US recently. I've also seen these sentiments expressed by various conservatives that I happen to know. They just can't stand the fact that a "foreign" sport is gaining a foothold in the US.

Any psychiatrist would diagnose her as a paranoid sociopathic delusional schizophrenic, but because she says stupid things that win the media ratings for replaying, she's allowed to just ramble on instead of someone actually doing what would be best for her... getting her to a doctor for treatment.
