Similar situation to the one in the story. He married a woman who had previously been with a hispanic guy, and her two children looked very hispanic. I don't know about any physical abuse, but it was clearly mentally abusive. He'd refer to them as his "little wetbacks" in public. He'd work his stepson like a dog in the yard, and then proudly proclaim that he was just getting him ready for "his future as a Mexican". I once saw his seven year old stepdaughter ride her bicycle into a neighbors parked car. When the neighbor came out, the guy apologized for the scratch on the car by saying "Sorry about that, but you can't expect too much from these dumb Mexican kids." The neighbor not-so-politely told the stepdad to go fuck himself.
A bunch of people in the neighborhood called CPS on the guy, but they never did anything except visit occasionally and "monitor the situation". Finally, one of his neighbors (a hispanic woman, fwiw) got so fed up that she tracked down the kids father. A number of people ended up testifying in court about what they'd seen, virtually everyone in the neighborhood signed affidavits saying that they'd seen the abuse, and the fed up neighbor even came up with some video of some of his comments that he'd made during a neighborhood BBQ. The judge completely stripped the mother of custody rights and gave the kids to their dad. The asshole stepdad was so pissed off that he ended up moving out of the neighborhood a few months afterward.
I'll never understand the mindset of people who can abuse a child, or of parents who can stand by while SOMEONE ELSE abuses their child. My asshole neighbor had always been an asshole, but the kids mother CHOSE to bring her children into that environment. WTF?
There is quite a lot of racist, but friendly, jibing in my household that would freak out people unfamilar with us. Even the Jew in the basement ("where they belong"
takes a hit from time to time.
