Source:Think Progress
Turns out, people dont find it particularly relaxing to be surrounded by strangers carrying guns.
The Lake Ozark, Missouri Board of Alderman voted last week to ban gun owners from openly carrying firearms, even if they have a concealed carry permit, because they were afraid that armed individuals would chase away tourists. Weve had a tough time over the years promoting Lake Ozark as a family area, Alderman Larry Buschjost explained. We want you on the Strip with families, everywhere in Lake Ozark with families. We want you to bring your kids down here and let them loose. For the life of me, I dont understand why I would have to carry any type of gun, concealed or otherwise.
The ban was initiated by the local police chief, in part due to concerns raised by business owners.
These business owners concerns are hardly unique to one community in Missouri. After a group of pro-gun activists in Texas started showing up at businesses with assault rifles and other long guns, the restaurant chain Chipotle released a statement asking their patrons to leave their firearms at home because the display of firearms in our restaurants has now created an environment that is potentially intimidating or uncomfortable for many of our customers. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz made a similar statement, explaining that customers in many stores have been jarred and fairly uncomfortable to see guns in our stores. Other companies, ranging from Whole Foods to Toys R Us to Ikea, also ban guns.

Perhaps THEY will be their own undoing, then. And the problem may be solved.
I feel the same way every time I hear somebody on camera discussing or opining about what the GOP should do to open things up. SHHHHH!!!!!! Leave 'em alone! Let them live in their delusions. Let them keep on thinking their pollsters know better. Don't help them climb out of the pit they're creating for themselves. I'd rather just smile and offer them another shovel!

They won't make the connection between darkened theaters in Branson with their deadly toys on parade, either.
All they know is that carrying a gun makes them feel both safe and powerful, probably for the first time in their lives.

(81,139 posts)I'm kinda glad they think they know everything. That way, their minds will be closed to reasonable things - while everyone else's are starting to open. Which means they may eventually be left behind. They all belong in the dustbin of history.
Perhaps THEY will be their own undoing, then. And the problem may be solved.

I grew up in Deer Isle, so of course I have a preference for that. You can reach Castine, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, Searsport, Camden, and Bangor easily enough from there, too. If you like lighthouses, some people follow a trail of them up the coast, staying overnight in different towns along the way.

(37,748 posts)All things being equal, it seems more accurate to say "a solution to a relevant and potential problem..." as was illustrated rather methodically in Texas.
But I imagine many half-wits believe that solutions which preempt the potential problem are indeed, "wasting tax payer dollars" or some other bit of bumper sticker wisdom allowing them to illustrate the rational as absurd.

(2,273 posts)It's illegal to Open Carry a long gun in Missouri so citing Texas as your reasoning to ban Open Carry is ridiculous. In Texas you can open carry a long gun but you can't a handgun while in Missouri you can open carry a handgun but not a long gun. They don't have the problem Texas has and they will never have the problem Texas has. Furthermore the reason Texas has the problem is that the state thinks it's perfectly OK for a guy to walk around with an AR-15 on his back but not a handgun on his side.
pamela
(3,469 posts)At no point in this article is anyone quoted as saying their concerns are based on Texas. All of the reasons given by the Police Chief, council members, etc are based on concerns by local businesses or their own personal desires to promote their community as a family-friendly place. Not a single person interviewed mentioned Texas.
Texas was brought up by the AUTHOR of the article and only cited as another place where businesses had expressed concerns about open carry. Bringing up Texas was simply filler-something the writer of the article added for whatever reason writers add that kind of filler.

(115,615 posts)that if I were in some public place - a restaurant, a coffee shop, a park, whatever - and some bozo (or group of bozos) suddenly showed up armed to the teeth with assault rifles, I'd be out of there so fast that my own shadow wouldn't be able to keep up with me. What the open carry idiots don't seem to understand is that there's no way to distinguish the "good guy with a gun" who is merely asserting his Second Amendment rights by showing us all what a tough 'merkin patriot he is (and displaying his manhood like a baboon in a zoo) from some disturbed character whose girlfriend just dumped him, or who couldn't get a girlfriend in the first place, or whose classmates picked on him, or who is hearing voices in his head, and intends to shoot up the place because he hates the world. So for my own safety I would have to assume that the gun-toting knucklehead is a dangerous loon and not just an upstanding citizen, and I would leave as quickly as possible. Any business owners who think it's OK for people to show up in their establishments looking like Special Forces wannabes with neck beards and paunches and lots and lots of guns will soon find themselves without normal customers.

I am with VO, if I saw a guy come into a place I was eating with a weapon (who wasn't a cop, of course) I would either be under the table or headed for the door. I am not going to waste precious seconds trying to determine this person's intent - I would prefer to err on the side of safety and GTF out of there. Hate finds a home in the Ozarks
The Joplin Globe/January 2001

The Ozarks has been tagged as one of three centers of radical right extremism in the United States.
Part of the reason for that is an accident of geography: The rural, thinly populated rhythm of hill and hollow provides natural cover.

Median pay here is less than minimum wage, lots of bars and restaurants. Some guy in the town of Lake Ozark claims to have the largest pistol collection in the state. Guys like him, the reason all these problems are happening, need to be run out of town.
But he's rich, and the cops love him. Even the chief that wants guns banned.

In a related story, the Tea Party led congress here has passed a sweeping set of tax bills, saving the rich people of the state countless millions. To really get their "freedom" on, many apparently need to parade them about in public. This will not prove sufficient over time. However, unfortunately for them, society will not collapse as predicted by the gun dealers, so they will never be used to "defend our freedom" and eventually will simply serve as museum pieces from a time when "people went a bit nuts".
