USA advances on goal differential. Germany 1 USA 0, and Portugal 2 Ghana 1 guarantees the US a spot in the knockout round.

(14,449 posts)Not really something to celebrate. We have not done that great. A tie and a loss is the recent results.

(23,922 posts)based on the draw the USA faced a much tougher road to the knockout round than other teams which had a better record in their groups.

(9,601 posts)On paper form USA would have come 3rd or 4th in the group.

(25,586 posts)A win, a draw, and a loss will usually get a team through if they keep their GD reasonable.

(44,228 posts)Certainly, though, Germany scoring 4 against Portugal in the opener helped the US immensely.

(29,146 posts)Both the US and Portugal had a one goal win, a draw (against each other), and a loss (both to Germany). But Portugal lost 4-0, while the US lost 1-0, so our goal differential in group play was better.

(16,245 posts)And the radio and TV as well. I'm sorry but I don't think the spoiler rule can apply to sporting events.
It's just stupid.
What's even the point of watching a game afterwards for entertainment purposes?

(154,021 posts)Because apparently some folks need to stay away from news.
It is the new DU...but personal attacks and stalking is fine.
Yup, shit like this pisses me off.

(154,021 posts)The rule was there during the Olympic. I realize when the US plays next I will stay away from this place. Now let me spoil the news in my own paper. After all, it is breaking

(20,605 posts)And don't give someone grief for being polite about it.
You could have written your OP header numerous ways without saying what happened, but you chose to spoil it.

(10,650 posts)that's the good news. The bad news is the team really looked flat against a very good German team. The Americans didn't seem to have a pulse until injury time at the end.
The Group H winner is going to give the American team a tough time.

(10,893 posts)It makes my head hurt wondering how a team can still advance when they lose.
Codeine
(25,586 posts)3 points for a win, 1 for a draw. Top two teams advance. Tie breakers are goal differential, then overall goals, then head-to-head goals and some finer points about goal differences, then a lot draw.
It rarely goes further than differential.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)The two teams ended with the same total points. That be 4. The US let in less goals total in the phase than Portugal. Remember Germany beat them 5-1. They needed to score 5 goals above what the US did today and then they would have moved forward.
Now every game becomes a you must win to advance. So now it is easy. Win, you advance. Lose go home. So you will see a lot of OT and penalties from now on.
Hopes this helps.
Mutiny In Heaven
(550 posts)A really small regular season, where the top two teams in each group of four progress to the play-offs. However, every game now is a one off - from now on, lose one game and you're out. Win, and you're in the next round.

(9,601 posts)NFL teams usually lose some games and still advance from their division to the play-offs.
