Not really something to celebrate. We have not done that great. A tie and a loss is the recent results.

based on the draw the USA faced a much tougher road to the knockout round than other teams which had a better record in their groups.

A win, a draw, and a loss will usually get a team through if they keep their GD reasonable.

Certainly, though, Germany scoring 4 against Portugal in the opener helped the US immensely.

Both the US and Portugal had a one goal win, a draw (against each other), and a loss (both to Germany). But Portugal lost 4-0, while the US lost 1-0, so our goal differential in group play was better.

And don't give someone grief for being polite about it.
You could have written your OP header numerous ways without saying what happened, but you chose to spoil it.

that's the good news. The bad news is the team really looked flat against a very good German team. The Americans didn't seem to have a pulse until injury time at the end.

The Group H winner is going to give the American team a tough time.

3 points for a win, 1 for a draw. Top two teams advance. Tie breakers are goal differential, then overall goals, then head-to-head goals and some finer points about goal differences, then a lot draw.

It rarely goes further than differential.

The two teams ended with the same total points. That be 4. The US let in less goals total in the phase than Portugal. Remember Germany beat them 5-1. They needed to score 5 goals above what the US did today and then they would have moved forward.

Now every game becomes a you must win to advance. So now it is easy. Win, you advance. Lose go home. So you will see a lot of OT and penalties from now on.

Hopes this helps.

A really small regular season, where the top two teams in each group of four progress to the play-offs. However, every game now is a one off - from now on, lose one game and you're out. Win, and you're in the next round.
