HRC charges $225,000 fee to Univ. which just had to raise tuition 17%

Yes, she's charging this speaking fee to a university which just announced a 17 percent tuition increase over the next four years! Way to win the youth vote, HRC! And this aspect cannot be emphasized too much: Although the engagement was confirmed on behalf of the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, a university spokesperson is quoted below as stating that "the money will not go to the family philanthropy."Remember that huge New York Times expose on the problems in the Clinton Foundation because no clear lines were being drawn between work for the foundation and work being done for personal and/or campaign activities? Well, that problem has obviously not been addressed.

Elias Benjelloun, UNLV’s undergraduate student body president, told the Las Vegas Sun this month that the school's trustees were trying to improve its offerings 'on the backs of students.'

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2014/jun/06/over-student-objections-tuition-unlv-going-17-perc/

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will collect a $225,000 speaking fee from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in October, it emerged on Tuesday.

The massive expense was confirmed just weeks after the university formalized a 4 per cent tuition increase for each of the next four years. Rate hikes have nearly tripled tuition costs there since 2004.

Clinton will deliver the keynote address at an invitation-only gala for philanthropists and other high-dollar donors who support UNLV. The university said private funds are being tapped to pay her speaking fee.The event was confirmed on behalf of the Bill, Hillary, & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, but a UNLV spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that the money will not go to the Clintons' family philanthropy.

But students see a zero-sum financial gain in which that money could have chipped away at tuition increases. $225,000? That's obscene!' UNLV student Jordan Mason told MailOnline. 'And the money is all fungible, right? Even if some CEO is writing the check, that's money that the person probably would have given to the university in some other way. I like Hillary,' Mason added, 'but if she's not willing to support us without all that money changing hands, maybe they should book someone else who won't add to the reasons we're paying more for school.'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2667421/225-000-Thats-obscene-Hillary-Clinton-collect-massive-speaking-fee-Nevada-university-students-grapple-tuition-hikes.html

The UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees is paying Clinton's $225,000 speaking fee to the Harry Walker Agency, which books her public appearances, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The $200 per plate dinner will include some attendees paying as much as $20,000 for special sponsorships that include a private photo session with Hillary Clinton.

Sen. Harry Reid on Thursday declined to second-guess officials at the UNLV Foundation who have agreed to pay $225,000 for Hillary Clinton to speak at a fundraiser this fall, a month after she is speaking for free at an energy conference Reid and the university are holding in Las Vegas.

Based on the reporting you are reading here but.

http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/nevada/reid-declines-second-guess-unlv-paying-hillary-clinton-speech

A month earlier, on Sept. 4, Clinton is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech at the Clean Energy Summit at Mandalay Bay. The event is an annual conference sponsored by Reid, UNLV, MGM Resorts and the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank.

http://www.cleanenergysummit.org/newsroom/in-the-media

Not exactly the energy guys I think you had in mind when you made that post.

And just for some more accuracy on this

A UNLV spokeswoman said Clinton’s fee is covered by private sponsorships and not public money.

It's a buttload of money to be sure and I am certainly no fan of Clinton but getting outraged over imaginary circumstances seems pretty silly.

I dont think this helps her image just the same.

13. HRC's charging a public university MORE than she charged Goldman-Sachs
Thu Jun 26, 2014, 07:01 PM
Jun 2014

Her Goldman-Sachs speaking fees were "only" $200,000 per speech. I gently suggest you consider the reality that it was/is as much in HRC's power to lower her fees as well as raise them.

And even if some celebrity-groupies/university trustees wanted to throw a posh soiree for their wealthy friends (up to $20,000 a seat), a good American citizen, let alone someone dangling the possibility of running for president (which is why people are willing to pay that exorbitant speaker's fee/individual per seat fee), would charge a public university considerably less than she charged Goldman-Sachs. I mean, she was just moaning about the burden of paying her daughter's college tuition, wasn't she? Has she NO empathy for the non-one-percent college students?

“If Hillary is going to run for President she might be advised to take a lengthy sabbatical from her $200k per pop speaking tour and private shopping sprees at Bergdorfs to try and reconnect with what’s happening back here on Earth,” America Rising spokesman Tim Miller wrote Sunday in the email to Politico.

In the 2012 presidential race, Democrats attacked GOP nominee Mitt Romney as rich and out of touch.

http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/hillary-clinton-collect-225000-keynote-unlv-fundraiser

I don't know whether it’s just that she’s been "Madam Secretary" for so long, but she’s generating an imperial image,' former South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian told The Washington Post on Sunday.

'She’s been living 30, going on 40 years with somebody bringing your coffee to you every morning. Is it more Downton Abbey than it is America?'

organization. The monies are not (or better not be; by law) fungible. Hell, though it's not emphasized in the OP, "The university said private funds are being tapped to pay her speaking fee."

Has anyone replying ever been involved in university alumni and foundation activities. They raise money from the community and alumni and use the funds for operations and special events or weekly brown bags and so on. No, those monies don't go into the university's general fund other than paying for on campus space and resources.

The tuition raises are a completely different animal. Caused because the fuck-head repubs we've had running and destroying this state have been cutting state funds; the state has lost federal funds as the congressional repubs have been blocking every fucking thing and de-funding their own grandmothers.

Nevada state funds are down after a couple of decades of republicans running the government "like a business." It hasn't worked well.

By the way, the rj is the Las Vegas version of the oh-so-reliable dailymail. They backed bundy up to and until he embarrassed the crap out of them. They'll head back to that extreme as soon as the dust clears. If they head any further to the r/w, they'll be in fascist territory. In case you've forgotten, they were involved in the lawsuit against DU. In short, unreliable in their reporting is a compliment. The national enquirer is more reliable.

The next time anyone on this board wonders why we don't have a Democratic version of the millionaire/billionaire crowd to pit against the repub lucky-sperm club...look at the way we treat those who have managed to make a financial success. Anyone remember the OMG Al Gore lives in a mansion and flys all over the planet instead of saving energy while education people about saving energy!!!! What a hypocrite he is!!!

I'm sure he would have had quite the impact traveling by horse and row boat.

Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea should sell off all their assets and wear sack-cloth, begging on the streets so we can point out how we all "walk our talk" so we don't look like hypocrites. Al Gore needs a horse and a row boat.

While posting on the internet.

edit to add: I just noticed; the dailymail article in the OP conflates two separate articles from two different papers 3 weeks apart about 2 different events as though the one discussing the tuition hikes is part of the one discussing the speaking fees.

edit for clarity about UNLV Foundation the sponsoring organization that is using private funds to pay speaker's fees.

They raise money from the community and alumni and use the funds for operations and special events or weekly brown bags and so on. No, those monies don't go into the university's general fund other than paying for on campus space and resources." and noted that they were separate issues, it might have been obvious.

I see that "strident" is more important than understanding.

The dailymail is not known for it's accuracy in reporting. Nor is the review journal. Please note that the dailymail also took quotes from a student who commented for an article about the tuition rates and combined them in this article with quotes from another student "outraged" at the amount of the speaking fees. There was a lot of questionable reporting in that article.

This is how spin is done. I thought people understood that.

The Foundation solicits funds from private donors, it isn't funded by student fees and there is no connection between the raise in tuition and anything the UNLV Foundation chooses to spend its money on, including speakers.

The raise in tuition, which is statewide, is primarily because the moronic Board of Regents who run NSHE, the Nevada System of Higher Education, are a corrupt and ineffective group who are more interested in raising the wages of coaches and approving new administrative positions than in providing a good, affordable education for students.

Same logic applies here. Sure, she has every right charge what the market will bear. Just as a CEO is able to demand pay that the market will bear. Just as a hedge fund manager is able to make what the market will bear. However, we don't get to excuse her, while chastising the others.

Also HRC showing up at your school generates a lot of news coverage all over the country, especailly if she makes news, so write the cost off to marketing. There's a very real CPM value there UNLV but I don't expect most to understand.
That's basically why speaking fee's are charged to events etc.

You have to love all the people defending her for "making a living" by trading on the public offices held by her and her husband. We can forget the fact that this sort of thing is a very recent phenomenon in American history, despite all the claims to the contrary. We can forget the heavy inference of corruption, given that the payment isn't for the speech, but the opportunity to make a connection. What we shouldn't forget is how damned incompetent a supposedly unbeatable presidential candidate has been acting lately. It took Romney 4 years into his second campaign to make his most egregious mistakes. At her current rate, she'll have her 47% and binders full of women moments by Christmas.
