Yeah, I know we've had some problems with white-bashing on here, but I don't think I've seen much in the way of outright anti-Caucasian racism on here, if at all; DU is honestly a lot more civil than some other places out there(i.e. Gradient Lair, and Flavia Dzodan's little oppo, whatever the heck it's called).

I haven't seen any outright bashing of the peoples of the Caucasus Mountain region here, so honestly it could be kinda dumb I guess to accuse anyone of doing so, depending on motivations, to be honest.

However, Hollywood has him to thank, in large part, for the Film Industry being in Southern California. In addition to large amounts of sunshine required for filming in days before effective and cheap studio lighting, moviemakers moved out there to get away from Edison's goon squads, who would bust up movie houses showing "his" proprietary idea- the motion picture- beating people up, setting fires, destroying equipment, etc.

Like I said, sort of a thug. Who had good PR people.

and forcibly convert everybody in it to some screwball religion (by their lights) while infecting them with diseases they had no resistance to and kidnapping a couple to amuse the guy he's claiming the bar for.

Then the analogy would hold up.

12. "Discover" is often used for things people already knew about.

Purely hypothetical example:
* Ben Carson gives a talk in which he says there's this website called democraticunderground.com and he's never read it before this week but now that he's seen it, wow is he appalled, so much liberal degeneracy and outright treason.
* DUer posts thread mocking and linking to Carson's comments -- and titles the thread "Ben Carson discovers DU!"

Would anyone say this was ridiculous? Would anyone say it must mean that Carson had discovered it for black people? No, and no. It would just mean that Carson hadn't been aware of it before and found out about it. That's one meaning of "discover" and it's the sense in which Columbus discovered America, because European society had not been aware of it before. That's different from the sense in which William Herschel discovered Uranus by being the first human to observe it.

And that bar in the clip? Yeah, it was a great bar until the hipsters discovered it.
