I joined this board back in 2003. In those days it was interesting and fun here. You could agree or disagree on a subject and discuss it
rationally and I have changed my mind on many of my political views. This board has changed over the years I think it started around the 2008 election when if you were not an Obama supporter you were ganged up on. Now people go whining to the jury about someone being hurtful if anyone disagrees with them. We have these groups where you have to agree on everything or you are not wanted. If someone makes a comment they don't agree with a snarky reply is made about spelling or grammar. Hey I am sorry I wasn't able to get a college education, I had to go to the army after high school and had to go to work for a living when I got out. So anyway I see no point in posting here anymore and am calling it quits. I know there will be some that say don't let the door hit you in the ass, well you can kiss it. To the others live long and prosper.

I believe with the science of man's contribution to climate, however I have difficulty accepting the theory that we can do anything about it without a total commitment of all the industrial world's cooperation..
Allowing China, India, Russia etc, off the hook, our efforts, and the economic costs of same, are infinitesimal in the bigger picture.. We must demand that the world share the burden, or punish them with economic sanctions.. Without that, our additional costs places us at a further disadvantage on the world trading stage..
Is this opinion going to get be banned? If so I accept it..

(2,638 posts)because I'm a DEMOCRAT!!! For some strange reason I assumed everyone here would be as well. No one will ever agree with every policy from any president no matter how great they are. Even FDR had his failings.
When I first came to DU there was a lot about the DLC and the Clinton's being part of it. Honestly I had never heard of the DLC until then and this forum really educated me about many things and started me researching facts... thankfully. I'm more of a watcher than a poster but what I've noticed more recently is how many are attacking each other. Maybe it's the acrimony in the air nowadays.
So I guess I'm a party loyalist so don't flame me for it. I would rather cut off my right arm before I would ever vote for or support any candidate who wasn't a Democrat. And they don't have to be perfect!
Erich Bloodaxe BSN
(14,733 posts)Like maybe you feel the Democratic party puts forth better policies, that help more people?
If so, why should you silence yourself when specific Dems put forth bad policy, that hurts people, AND makes Dems less electable overall?
Isn't it better for the party if we refuse to let certain Dems drag the party towards right-wing Republican policies?
sunnystarr
(2,638 posts)I believe that all members of society should be lifted up. This means a larger central government which distributes the collective wealth to ensure that the elderly have a safety net; that all children are entitled to a good education from pre-K through college; that when people lose their jobs, especially through federal policies or failings, they get unemployment insurance (I don't believe that should be taxable); that a society needs the arts and research should be encouraged and funded; that health care shouldn't be run by for profit corps and all are entitled to health care; that collectively we can overcome any adversity. I believe in decriminalizing drugs and only protecting our young from their distribution. I believe in a strong defense but not one to police the world. I believe in fair trade as opposed to free trade. I believe that all profits from US businesses and corporations should be taxable and making offshore tax shelters illegal. I believe in labor unions and collective bargaining and workers rights for all workers.
Do all Democrats share my beliefs? I don't think so. But I'll take as close as I can get in a candidate. A republican would never come close - they are diametrically opposed to all I believe in. But this is the climate our Dems must deal with. They have to make compromises to inch closer to the desired outcome.
Now Obama is pragmatic. He's made some mistakes but he's learning, as anyone in his position would. I believe his heart is in the right place and sometimes you have to make deals to get the funding to fight another day. Like it or not the money lies with the 1% and our representatives need the money to fund elections. Until that changes they'll have to compromise their ideals in order to get as much as they can.
So to answer your last point. Whoever wins the Dem primary will get my vote.

I'm married to Mrs. 1SBM. The composition of the board is, largely, the same as it was during the bush years. If anything the post-bush board has found more posters that identify as a Democrat as a 3rd political descriptor, after liberal and progressive ... Prior to that, there was very little differentiation among Democrats, or discussions of "party loyalty", we were happily focused in our opposition to bush; rather than, our current state of consistently "proving" our "Really, real liberal/progressive", {ETA:} or "really, real" Democratic bona fides.
If one opposed bush, one was largely accepted; wherever, one fell on the political spectrum.
Moses2SandyKoufax
(1,290 posts)how the hell would you know what "the board's composition" was like during the Bush administration?
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)You do realize that people leave DU ... sometimes one their own, other times escorted, and return, right?
I have been quite open with my history ... I happen to be someone that has done both. I left once (sometime in 2004) because I made a regarding white supremacy in a specific group and was show the door. I returned, and have never been back to that group. I left a second time (sometime in 2010) because I got tired of having white people tell me what was, and wasn't, "legitimately racist."
So I know a hell of a lot about DU during the bush years.

(10,745 posts)I've only been here since 2011 myself, but I've noticed a pretty drastic change within this last year or so in terms of discourse. Frankly, it does get tiring, hearing about literal "white privilege", and "all men are potential rapists", from some of our resident fringe lefties, not to mention climate doomer idiocy, etc.
And, btw, I am very much a devoted Obama supporter.
Speaking of the doomers, btw, I assume that an E & E problem might have been the last straw(judging by some comments here)? I won't comment on your situation because I dunno what really happened there, but I was banned myself......but not for actual "denial"; rather, it was for simply disagreeing with some of the resident doomers(including the application of critical thinking skills), and being willing to stand by my positions, and call out bad info, or fearmongering, etc. for what it really was. Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty thoughtful folks over there, but unfortunately, the doomers and their allies pretty much run the place right now.....and they're about as annoying as the most extreme of the HoFers sometimes.
(P.S., btw, for those of you concerned about my mention of "white privilege", I realize that not everybody who believes in such is actually part of the aforementioned problem. In other words, if you haven't engaged in personal attacks, manipulation, trolling, etc., and have been able to respectfully disagree with anti-"privilege" folks such as myself without resorting to dirty tactics, then don't worry, because this isn't referring to you.)

But in 2008, I remember that anybody who said anything that wasn't 100% supportive of Hillary Clinton was fed to the wolves. I remember someone pointing out that HRC was a conservative DLC Democrat and a bunch of people jumped on him and ran him off the board. (I feel the same Hillary machine gearing up again.)

It seems to me that to be a Democrat at all you have to have pretty thick skin anyhow. It seems to me that we have a variety of Democratic philosophies on DU. I see people bash Obama all the time, so I don't know what you are whining about, unless this is just a ploy to get sympathy. ("Take my marbles and go home" type reaction.)

They demand that you think as you are told, and speak as you are told - free thought, free expression will guarantee you a brutal attack. The stuff the blackest days in Western civilization were made of. They want their echo chamber, and they mean to get it.
If Skinner wants to save DU, he'll do something about that situation quickly.
All that to say I know exactly what you are talking about, and to say you shouldn't go, just take a break, like all long-term DUers do. Or stay and fight for the kind of board you want. Don't let a few whiny little loudmouth children run you off.

(21,786 posts)He's flouncing off in a huff because he's pissed off about having been banned from the Environment and Energy group for being a climate-change denialist. Anthropogenic global warming is not an issue there are "points of view" on; it's as close as we have to settled scientific fact. That sort of "free thought" deserves to be brutally attacked; it deserves to be taken out back, beaten to a pulp, and have a stake driven through its heart to be sure it's dead.
In this case at least, good riddance.

(1,315 posts)Sorry, but to what extent is still up for debate.
I personally think we need a Manhatten Project sized effort toward renewable and true green energy and ag, but do not in anyway claim we know WHY the climate is shifting, or even use climate volatility for the reason to shift to a more manegeable, and consistent policy regarding our energy and food needs.

(21,786 posts)CO² levels up from below 320ppm to over 400ppm over the span of 53 years? Entirely caused by human activity and the burning of fossil fuels. Climate feedbacks from increased atmospheric CO² are well-known at this point. (See the melting of glaciers and the weakening of the Antarctic ice shelf, for instance).

and yes, your time may be more beneficially spent in other ways. Though DU is the sum of it's members, all sane people are missed.

(5,700 posts)Having so much posts must mean that you are a valuable contributor on here. But what do I know, some of us are outsiders and from time to time we see a post that says if you are not American, you have no voice on here to comment. Politics is universal and we can contribute if we are politically aware.
Please come back, your voice is important.

(27,630 posts)As if we want to come to DU and read ignorant posts about climate change? No thanks. This is hardly a left-center point of view. We have no time for more anti-science bullshit.
Climate change is probably the clearest and most decisive litmus test of who is a suitable DU member and who is not.

(27,630 posts)I mean, there are a couple of unofficial litmus tests as to who belongs on DU and who does not. Two of the most clear cut disqualifiers are: 1. Liking Glenn Beck; 2. Being a climate change skeptic
IrishAyes
(6,151 posts)Not even Blue Dogs like Glen Beck and are anti-science climate change deniers. If someone wants to stir up a hornet's nest by gooing over those idiocies, they damn well better expect a few stings. What kind of fool does that anyway and then cries, "Mommy! They hit me back!" ?? Indefensible.
If someone loves Ignorati conspiracy theorists, let 'em crap in that house instead of invading civilization. I have nothing but the deepest and fiercest contempt for people who want to relieve themselves in places where they don't belong due to boorish behaviors they've chosen.
No apologies.

(30,481 posts)and still oppose the overwhelming science with respect to climate change. It is more than understandable that you were blocked from E/E. In that period of time, for you to still be anti-science, is pretty shocking.
Being blocked from one group here should not cause this type of internal conflict. There are many people here who hold views outside of what is considered to be progressive or matching with the Democratic Party platform. Most simply avoid those topics out of respect to the members of this board. This is not giving in. It is understanding the community you are participating in, acting like an adult, and respecting others. Take part in discussions you do not hold right wing/anti-science views in. It is done by members here all day. This look at me thing you have going on isn't adding anything to the board. You have invested a lot of time here. Find other sites like freerepublic to discuss your right wing/anti-science views and discuss your more progressive views here. Life becomes much better when you respect the community you are a part of.
Look forward to seeing your posts in the future.

(46,192 posts)that's what he got blocked from the group for doing (climate change denial).
if that's truly the kind of discussion you want, then why haven't you posted an OP in GD to discuss it? who is stopping you?
nobody.
but if you posted it in GD it would prove that you have no idea what you're talking about and that your charge that the topic the OP wants to discuss can't be discussed on DU.
IT CAN.
get it right next time.

(20,582 posts)I hope you'll take a bit of a break and come back, but only you know what's best, and I sincerely hope you don't let anything that's been said here affect you personally .... some like to put others down just to make themselves feel better - doing it on a message board is kinda funny though, don't you agree? I mean, any of us can be anything we want here - college education, Master's degree, whatever .... or we could be junior high school dropouts or even a troll intent on disrupting for all anyone knows. Some have earned the right to have their opinions respected, others .... not so much. Your voice is as important as any. Don't let anyone - ever - make you feel bad for speaking out.
Best of luck with whatever you decide!

(3,128 posts)I have served on several juries where the complaint was nothing less than petty or being upset because someone used a word that the person didn't like or didn't agree with them.
The other DUer with whom I met yesterday for a chat and I didn't know why Skinner lets a small gang of people disrupt DU with their one-issue fetishes. These people are too often nothing less than bullies. Sometimes I just want to scream at them: "Get over it! We have all had bad experiences in our lives." I also hate the grammar and spelling police on the board and I was a high school English teacher for 12 years, taught college freshman comp, and worked on my PhD in rhetoric. I have also been a paid editor since the age of 12 years old. It is very difficult to edit one's own writing, and it is worth noting that authors are paid significantly more than editors and proof readers--I can attest to that.
It is sad to see you go. Perhaps someone will start a discussion board where a small fraction will not be permitted to disrupt discussions and get comments hidden for petty or personal-passion reasons.

(20,411 posts)seems there was an influx of new members around then with a particular mind-set, one in which any difference of opinion about certain topics was to be met with derision. I used to frequently check the join-date of posters displaying this tendency and was surprised how many joined in that election year.
