Fastest-Growing Metro Area in U.S. Has No Crime or Kids

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-27/fastest-growing-metro-area-in-u-s-has-no-crime-or-kids.html

For Jerry Conkle, life in America’s fastest-growing metropolitan area moves as slowly as the golf carts that meander through his palm-lined neighborhood at dusk. Most days, he wakes early, reads the newspaper, and then hops into his four-wheeled buggy for a 20-mile-per-hour ride to one of the 42 golf courses that surround his home.

“It’s like an adult Disney World,” Conkle, 77, said of The Villages, Florida, whose expansion has come with virtually no crime, traffic, pollution -- or children.

The mix has attracted flocks of senior citizens, making The Villages the world’s largest retirement community. Its population of 110,000 has more than quadrupled since 2000, U.S. Census Bureau data show. It rose 5.2 percent last year, on par with megacities like Lagos, Nigeria, and Dhaka, Bangladesh.

That the most rapidly expanding U.S. metro area is a Manhattan-sized retirement village -- with more golf carts than New York has taxis -- highlights the transformation of the world’s demographic profile. The over-60 set -- which the United Nations projects will almost triple to 2 billion by 2050 -- offers opportunity to marketers and homebuilders even as it confounds governments that must care for an aging populace.

people. Wealthy conservatives. I have also read that there is a very high incidence of STDs there - and this was addressed in their local website/newsletter, and not exactly discounted -

http://www.thevillagesfloridabook.com/sex-lies-and-the-villages/

And as far as the numbers/percentages are concerned, you can see for yourself here that the disease totals in all three counties that make up The Villages combine to be just a very small percentage of STD’s in the state.

The place is in three counties, it is huge.

You do get in there if you don't have enough money.

It's just a much larger gated community.

We are going back into feudal society.

I have friends that live there. Both blue collar workers who retired from union jobs and wanted to live in a warmer place. They paid 170,000 for a nice two bedroom home and are loving life. The price of everything is much lower than New England so their money goes a lot further.

I live about 30 miles from it and remember when there was nothing but orange groves and pasture there. It's spread like kudzu.

They've got every chain restaurant and store you can imagine in their 4-5 shopping plazas. All the restaurants have 90 minute waits every night. People drive their golf carts to them at night.

They have great movie theaters, though.

When you see it on a map, it's unreal. I stayed there with a relative once and it took 20 minutes to get to one of the "squares" and we never left the Villages!

And not lovable, wacky Carl Hiaasen Florida weird, either. Just plain creepy weird. Sort of a Children of the Corn, sans the Children part.

Of course, I find Disney World to be creepy weird as well. Reminds me of a fascist dictatorship.

be no Crime? We are supposed to believe that Crime is down because of all the people packing around guns, so where are all the guns in this community?

Of course, there'll be no reason to use any of those guns, but that won't stop them from thinking they absolutely need them for their survival. For example, if a scary dark person is cutting their lawn and they don't like what he's doing with that weed whacker.
