The wackos are being rallied: Republicans launch digital effort to rally evangelicals to the polls

June 27, 2014

RNS) The Republican National Committee on Friday (June 27) launched its first web-based effort to rally conservative believers behind the party, a sign of how crucial voter turnout will be in this fall’s close-fought midterm elections and an indication that the GOP cannot take its evangelical Christian base for granted.

“This shouldn’t be outreach, this should be who we are — it is who we are,” said Chad Connelly, director of Faith Engagement for the Republican National Committee and the force behind this new initiative, GOPfaith.com.

Evangelicals, Connelly said, “are our biggest, most reliable voting bloc.”

The problem, however — and the opportunity that Connelly sees — is that even though evangelicals identify more closely than ever with the GOP, they have have not been turning out at the polls in sufficient numbers to carry Republican candidates to victory.

1. Religion and politics?

I hope someone is keeping track of this. Seems as if I read something about religious organizations were given those tax-exemptions because they were not to be involved in endorsing political groups. Yes, this sounds naive as hell and I know that there is a lot of political evangelizing from the pulpit.

I live in the Panhandle of Florida where it's God, guns, Republicans and grits. Remember seeing a billboard in front of a Baptist church when Bush vs. Gore that read, "Vote Bush Democrats are hell-bound." Blatant and overt as all hell. Church is still there.
