Putin’s Anti-LGBT Law Turns One

In advance of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s notorious anti-LGBT law, today the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation released a new report highlighting deeply disturbing trends of harassment, investigations, arrests, and acts of violence against LGBT Russians that have followed in its wake.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the internationally condemned and draconian anti-LGBT propaganda law on June 29, 2013, and it entered into force the following day. This law––and the homophobic and transphobic cultural debate that swirled around it––has fueled an appalling backlash against members of Russia’s LGBT community. HRC Foundation’s full Russia: Year in Reviewreport, which documents this backlash, is available here.

“Witch hunts, arrests, poisonous gas attacks, and murders. Not only do these terms evoke powerful memories of brutal regimes that fill the pages of history books, they also represent the very real dangers that LGBT people face each and every day in Vladimir Putin’s Russia,” said Ty Cobb, HRC Foundation’s Global Engagement Director. “The evidence is clear: state-sponsored homophobia and transphobia in Russia poses a direct threat to the safety and welfare of LGBT Russians, and that threat is growing.”

“The consequences of this law for all Russian society are difficult to overestimate,” said Maria Kozlovskaya, Program Manager for the advocacy group Russian LGBT Network. “Our public polls suggest that the level of violence against LGBT people has increased significantly, and that members of the community feel vulnerable and targeted.”

gone by, he would be just like IMO the other chilling leaders of Russia's past. In short, Putin is gross, and those pictures of him half naked and flabby, again gross, just a gross individual IMO.

The only difference is today's tyrant is more controlling of social media then in the past. So he can create a warmer and fuzzier image of himself, while remaining a brutal dictator.

Honestly, how we survived the Bush era is a miracle. Bush just reinforced what I felt about him at the time, he would be just as happy being a fellow dictator like Putin.

Both men are sociopaths.

and more I become amazed at just how many deranged people the US has. LGBT is an easy target for them, much as people of color and others. They just have to have something to hate and torment.

in time to a time during which their social group — their power and cultural hegemony was unquestioned.

As it pertains to our tea partiers, a 'reactionary conservative':

It’s bigger than racism. People who tend to support the Tea Party, they tend to be sexist, they tend to be homophobic, they tend to be xenophobic; so it’s not just about race. It’s about difference.

Of course, in the Russian version racism is not as key as with American tea partiers. For Putin it is ethnicity and what language you speak that the important differences that determine whether you are one of 'us' or one of 'them'.
