The words "human trafficking" and "sex slavery" seemed so foreign to me when I first heard them years ago. Despite the statistics and celebrity spokespeople assuring me that it was a growing, shameful, and underreported epidemic in America, I never really understood the issue in my heart until I met a survivor. She was a young woman who, just like me and every other human on this planet, simply wanted to be loved. Her story and the stories of countless others must be told. This poem is a beautiful place to start.
