Altidore will play against Belgium!

SAO PAULO – Jozy Altidore took part in a jogging session Friday at the U.S. men's national team's practice session and coach Jurgen Klinsmann expressed optimism that the talented forward’s left hamstring could be ready for action by Tuesday’s World Cup elimination game against Belgium.

It was the third consecutive day Altidore has jogged. Trainers stretched him out after the light run around the practice field. His gait appeared normal or close to normal as he ran.

“We are very optimistic to have him to be a part of the Belgium game,” Klinsmann said. "Every day is a big step forward.”

Technically his status is “uncertain,” according to team spokesman Michael Kammarman.

Altidore strained his hamstring early in the opening game against Ghana. While he has struggled of late to find the back of the net, the 6-foot-1, 24-year-old offers a physical presence that the U.S. can’t replicate. The U.S. played with just one player up – Clint Dempsey – and instead added to the midfield ranks.

How's that for good news on a Friday afternoon!

who grew up with immigrant backgrounds which involve kicking the ball around as toddlers.

I am astonished that Klinsi has been able to find so many players with dual German-American nationality. Who knew? Could we try that approach with other countries? England? Mexico? Brazil?

Mexican immigrants. There are some Hispanic names on Team US, though I don't know their family backgrounds. You're only going to get nationals from those countries who can't make their own teams.

He isn't a very good striker in the scoring sense, but at least he can hold the ball up so Dempsey can do damage.

We can beat Belgium, they're overhyped due to the young age of the team. They don't really score very well, only 4 goals against poor countries like Algeria, Korea and Russia. Belgium's strength is organization and defense, and their best defender (Kompany) is injured.

A hamstring injury really requires a period of rest since coming back too soon could easily reinjure it and cause it to be much worse. I don't know off the top of my head where that match will be played, but if it's going to played in hot and humid conditions, than that's even more true.

Start him on the bench at best. I think the US have a decent shot against unimpressive Belgium in any case.

Fonte Nova on the Dique do Tororó. I used to live there. It's winter now, so expect rain. It's not nearly as hot as Manaus. In fact it's mild this time of year.

This is a view of the brand new stadium from the lake.
