Faced with the threat of legal action over his use of executive power, President Barack Obama pointed his finger squarely back at congressional Republicans on Friday, stating that their historic inaction prompted him to go it alone to address the nation's problems.
"They don't do anything except block me and call me names," Obama said in a speech on the economy at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Without citing which specific executive actions he intended to challenge, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced this week that he would bring legislation to the floor authorizing the House to file a lawsuit against the president to "compel" him to enforce existing law. "We elected a president, Americans note; we didnt elect a monarch or king," he wrote in a memo to his colleagues.
That set the president off on Friday. In an interview with "Good Morning America," he dismissed the suit as nothing more than a "stunt." And in his remarks in Minnesota, he argued that he was forced to take action on immigration, the federal minimum wage and pay discrimination because this Congress, which has been called the least productive Congress in history, refused to compromise on legislative priorities.

With this suit, it will be nearly impossible to control the message as the Administration will be able to answer all the "over-reach" charges with: Everything is constitutionally permissible; but more, necessary, as congress has been unable/unwilling to act on important matters of state.
The response to the suit will read as a campaign ad for Democrats ... particularly, those running for a House seat, and to a lesser degree, a Senate seat. The response will highlight all the measures that Democrats/the Administration has put forward to deal with Jobs, the infrastructure, climate change, student debt, workers' wages, and all the other areas where President Obama has issued Executive Orders, only to be killed by the republican House, or "filibustered" in the Senate ... And Highlight what republicans have offered instead ... 50+ votes to repeal the ACA, anti-abortion bills, etc., but nothing to address the areas where Executive Orders were issued.
I can't think of a better way to get the obstruction message out to the electorate, than having to answer this suit.

(10,495 posts)His base will be pissed he did not go straight for impeachment, and like has been said above, the lawsuit will draw attention both ways. Obama will be able to lay out in writing all of the arguments pointing out all of the stupid things Congress did to waste time and money, how little they actually did their job, and last, but not least, how low they sunk to "get" Obama. This will cost Republicans a lot of Independent voters who like the rest of us Liberals, are sick and tired of the gridlock while we have so many serious problems with our country.
