(15,024 posts)though actually, I became incredibly disillusioned & disgusted with the American media during the Iranian Hostage situation, when all pretense at education and objectivity was discarded in favor of rampant jingoism and a pandering to emotions. It was a good thing Jimmy Carter was President. A lesser man might have been swayed to war by the agitated, ill-informed voices of the press.
I went back to college at that time, eventually wrote one of my senior thesis on the Iranians' ability to manipulate our press. I remember, on the title page, I placed a political cartoon, an image of the Ayatollah Khomeini playing with an American television cameraman as if he were a marionette. The caption below read, "The Ayatollah has America by its networks."
I have rarely watched television news since, and to this day only view clips from it on the internet, images not easily conveyed in print or a still photo -- the Japanese tsunami, for example.

(11,443 posts)Twenty years ago I knew plenty of people who watched them, especially Meet The Press. Even the repukes I know have given up on them. What's sad is that CNN keeps going full blast repuke, and their ratings continue down the tubes. Will they ever learn?
