The call to prayer rang out across the streets of Maan its long, loud, lilting cry signalling the eve of the Muslim religious holiday of Ramadan
Inside the white-marbled mosque the imams sermon was one of forgiveness. His words broadcast outside fell on the ears of young children as they handed out cakes to passers-by in the sunshine.
It was a scene of tranquillity in this southern Jordanian city, a very normal Friday. That was until the worshippers began to leave the mosque.
At that point a crowd of men, some in military camouflage jackets, others bearded and wearing long black tunics, burst into defiant cries. Shouting Allahu Akhbar thanks be to God they unfurled a large black flag bearing the symbol of the jihadist militia, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (Isis).
Strengthened by their victories in Syria and Iraq, where they have seized control of the north of the country, Isis and its followers are now also gaining purchase in Jordan.

(111,175 posts)it sounds like a lot of bullshit by sabre rattling neocons. Borders in the whole region are going to be redrawn unless ISIS gets battle weary. Lebanon is next, along with carving out Kurdistan in southeastern Turkey and northwestern Iraq. The Turks are not going to be happy.
Jordan is 95% Sunni, so they might go along to get along peacefully. They won't be facing the kind of ethnic cleansing Iraq and Syria will see.
The real question will be Israel, whether or not the pre 1967 borders will be respected. I doubt the post 1967 borders will be respected.
The biggest challenge for the US will be to ignore the hawks and stay out of this. It could spin into a world war very quickly if the colonial powers are too invested in keeping the borders they set without regard to the people who had to live within them.
