The problem with treating the truth like a dirty secret is that it leads to situations like today's, where a CNBC panelist brought his own show to a halt after stating the obvious: "Tim Cook is fairly open about the fact that he's gay at the head of Apple, isn't he?"
Silence.

(12,233 posts)The wealthy operate on a different level than the most of us. Now that this host "outed" the CEO of Apple, and its been picked up by other media outlets, it may actually become more of an issue to Apple. It could become one of those Chick filet issues if the media carries away with it. I'm not sure what the result would have on Apple sales or stock if it becomes some big social fight? Probably the reason why Tim Cook hasn't stood on a public stage and given some big, "I'm out" speech. A company would want very little news to be generated over employees or CEO's at all. The product should be the selling point.
So, while the man wasn't "hiding in a closet"; he also wasn't leading a Pride parade either. AND even crazier is the story about the host now "outing" Cook on a cable channel most of us never watch ever. This is literally news making their own news to generate interest and speculations and perhaps someone popping onto CNBC to see what they are covering? OR perhaps there is someone who is gambling on which way stock would go if they create a "gay" media issue around Apple's CEO; especially when this fall the new iPhone 6 is to enter the market. I hope the story goes away and that we don't make, I don't know, the 15th post about this on DU alone.

(12,233 posts)I would think that if the right gloms on and says, I'm not buyin Apple (boycott) and then the left jumps on.. The entire issue of the CEO's sexuality is balooned beyond his life and into a social issue. At that point, he might lose his job because the company and its products shouldn't be effected by the CEO. And I'm sure it would be done in a manner where he resigned and took a large pay out.
I just find it interesting that "outing" someone who isn't really in a closet, but wasn't something that financial wizards on a supposed financial news show should probably have said, could be spun out of control. It's been posted many times now and is all over the web. The comments on sites, non-DU are pretty disgusting. There are still people out there who are extremely disgusting and homophobic in this country. Its not all rainbows and celebratory parades.

(101,155 posts)and 'Out' magazine called him the most influential LGBT person in the USA over a year ago: http://www.out.com/out-exclusives/power-50/2013/04/10/power-list-2013?page=0,4 (which they've marked as 'same as last year', so presumably they said that in 2012 too); this year they've put him at no.2, with Ellen de Generes at #1. So significant parts of the media have already publicised it; does CNBC really count for much?
