They say Harrier pilots are some of the best in the world as the aircraft is notoriously hard to handle in hover. This video is further proof that this statement is true. Talk about nailing it!
You have to see it to believe it. And yes this Pilot is Awesome.

(51,076 posts)After all these years (47) I'm still proud that I joined the Navy rather than the Army, Air Force or Marines. Even though I never seen a ship and still wound up in Vietnam. I must admit that the main reason I joined the Navy was to stay out of 'Nam but as fate would have it I wound up volunteering for the 'Nam duty.

(18,964 posts)...all military pilots are taught it...some execute it perfectly...Like this guy!!!!
I do have a question though. Why didn't the pilot know about this
kind of contingency?
The pilot said he was told the stool was made specifically for that purpose,
while he was in the air.
It's hard to believe that those pilots weren't told of the stool before, or
trained for it at least by simulation.

(111,152 posts)and everybody knows it except maybe the pilots, hence the kludge of a giant "stool" to let the nose down on.
You'd think they'd come up with a solution to fix the landing gear, instead.

(360 posts)It's not a stool, it's a tool designed for aircraft to land on.

(1,643 posts)We now have the F-35, a product of design-by-management, which can barely do anything right.
The Harrier and Warthog make me pine for the Cold War...

(26,311 posts)It's been years since I've read much or thought much about the aircraft... But I seem to remember that it was never rated that highly.
The super STOL ability always seemed like a solution without a problem. And the thing is difficult to handle.
A coll airplane nonetheless.

(1,643 posts)I think it's more a force projection aircraft than anything else. "Look at what WE can do!"
