The Rise of the DIY Abortion in Texas

http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/06/the-rise-of-the-diy-abortion-in-texas/373240/

The Alamo flea market sits right off South Texas’s lengthy Highway 83; a sprawling, dusty, labyrinth of a place. Under canopies in the converted parking lot, vendors in dark sunglasses stand behind tables heaped with piles of clothing, barking in Spanish and hawking their wares. The air is hot and muggy, thick with the scent of grilled corn and chili.

Customers browse simple items—miracle-diet teas, Barbie dolls or turquoise jeans stretched over curvy mannequins—but there are also shoppers scanning the market for goods that aren't displayed in the stalls. Tables lined with bottles of medicine like Tylenol and NyQuil have double-meanings to those in the know: The over-the-counter drugs on top provide cover for the prescription drugs smuggled over the border from nearby cities in Mexico. Those, the dealer keeps out of sight.

I’m here to look for a small, white, hexagonal pill called misoprostol. Also known as miso or Cytotec, the drug induces an abortion that appears like a miscarriage during the early stages of a woman’s pregnancy. For women living in Latin America and other countries that have traditionally outlawed abortion, miso has been a lifeline—it’s been called “a noble medication,” “world-shaking” and “revolutionary.” But now, it’s not just an asset of the developing world.

As policies restricting access to abortion roll out in Texas and elsewhere, the use of miso is quickly becoming a part of this country’s story. It has already made its way into the black market here in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley, where abortion restrictions are tightening, and it is likely to continue its trajectory if anti-abortion legislation does not ease up and clinics continue to be closed.

Do it yourself and back alley abortions will happen more
frequently now; and some women will pay for it with
their lives or serious bodily harm.

Thank you, you pro-death smarmy "pro lifers."

10. And the sad thing we all know is that many of them don't really care about "life," they care

just about stopping abortion b/c it's a sin in THEIR religion! They don't care that many of these ladies will die from a drug interaction when they take the pill while on other meds. They don't care about the deaths in back rooms and alleys. They cannot see that they will never "stop" abortion.

"If we stop one lady from having an abortion it's worth it," heedless of how many die trying!

They don't women to have access to abortion but they don't want them to have contraception, either.

And I would bet cash money that many of the participants in said black market probably are dead set against people having access to contraceptives - especially women.

The Totalitarian Republican War on Women and their ongoing effort to control women's bodies & souls was bound to lead to dangerous developments.

women will have safe, legal access or back alley forced alternatives. Wikipedia claims this pill (which is safer that an abortion performed by a non professional provider) sells for $100.00 in Brazil, which puts it out of reach of many women. My guess is that once legal abortions are impossible to get in the U.S.,the black market price for them will go up here too.

The black market drug solution is evidence that the populace is mastering the learning curve in dealing with the Christo Nazis.

*her daughter has been a member of DU - not sure if she is still here or not. Here is the story about her mom:

In 1964, 28-year-old Geraldine Santoro bled to death on the floor of a Connecticut hotel room after she and her former lover, Clyde Dixon, attempted an abortion on their own. Dixon, who had no medical experience of any kind, used a textbook and some borrowed tools. When things went terribly wrong, he fled the scene, and Santoro died alone.

(there are pictures online and it is tragic. I felt no need to bring them to this post but it is easy enough to do the search and read more about Ms. Santoro).

I took the above paragraph from a Socialist Worker publication:

An era of tragedy for women
When abortion was illegal

October 21, 2005 | Pages 6 and 7

THE THREAT of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion throughout the U.S., being overturned has never been more real.

Anti-choice Catholic and documented sexist John Roberts now heads the U.S. Supreme Court as chief justice. And Harriet Miers, a right-wing Christian fundamentalist who Bush has nominated for the Supreme Court, seems destined to be the next anti-abortion justice.

But even if Roe vs. Wade isn't formally overturned, the degree to which abortion is available in the U.S. today is an open question. Already, 87 percent of all U.S. counties don't have an abortion provider. After years of politicians chipping away with laws such as the federal late-term abortion ban and countless state restrictions, abortion rights have been rolled back beyond the point of real use by millions of women, particularly poor women and women of color.

History shows that women have always tried to terminate unwanted pregnancies. When safe medical procedures are banned by law, they have resorted to dangerous--sometimes deadly--"back-alley" abortions ...

I'm beginning to pray for "Ladies Buyers Clubs" to become a reality. Such a shame, when women have a right to a safe & legal abortion. I will never understand why state laws have turned out to trump Federal laws. I thought it was the other way around. Looks to me like Roe v Wade has been overturned.

Are we going to have to go back and fight for women's liberation all over again? Hey, I'm game. Someone might have to push me in a wheel chair, but I'll be there in my Bella Abzug hat and hand out wire hangers for props. Why not have giant protests in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio and/or Austin before election day? Pro-Choice and Pro-Wendy. OR call for Pro-Choice protests in every state capitol. Rolling protests by time zones, spaced out in two-week intervals. Eastern time zone would have to be in D.C. Yes? Central time zone, in Austin, TX. Mountain time zone, where? A northern midwest state? And Pacific time, San Francisco? We need to get our women power back and get in the street!

For women taking control of their own bodies. And for making sure they can do it as healthy as possible.
