(12,232 posts)Goalie definitely the hero today.
Huge wake up call for Brazil. Chile was tough.
Adding - heartbreaker for Chile, coming so close.
I'm happy to see Brazil win, though.

(6,261 posts)Brave call to rule out the obvious handball goal. Gutted for Chile...

(53,012 posts)I thought it hit his shoulder before he kicked it.
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)Between the shoulder and elbow. The yellow was perhaps harsh because I don't think it was strictly-speaking intentional.

(18,482 posts)There was enough arm to warrant a call but yellow seemed excessive
BainsBane
(53,012 posts)and he doesn't try to catch it, how is that his fault? I have a hard time sorting out what is and isn't a foul.
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)I wouldn't mind seeing a few more angles, but it really looked to me like he trapped the ball with his arm on the way to the goal.
Ball-to-hand or hand-to-ball is the usual bone of contention. That said, if the defender makes himself wide by e.g. holding his arms out wide ("In an unnatural position" and the ball hits his arm, it's a stonewall penalty whether he moved his arm to the ball or not.
I'd say the Australian penalty against Holland was an example of a bad call because it was a case of ball to hand with the defender's arms in a perfectly natural position next to his body. What was he supposed to do with that arm? He never moved it.
Like everything in this sport, it's always prefaced with "in the opinion of the referee".
Other than perhaps not yellow carding Fernandinho early on, I think Webb and his assistants had a near-perfect game today.
Chile were unlucky though, but not undone by the referee at least. On a different night, things might have easily been very different with that rocket against the crossbar near the end of extra time....

(53,012 posts)They were flying all over the place.
I would not say Chile was unlucky. They barely had possession in the second half or overtime play. Their defense was good, but they seemed to be content to draw and then hope to get lucky in penalties.

Good game, Good Tournament

(6,261 posts)I thought Chile would win the penalty series. Brazil look terrified before the series, especially Cesar.
Good first penalty by Luiz must've settled their nerves.

(268,688 posts)Brazil's record against Chile is out of this world good. I always thought Brazil would win this one. PHEW!!

(42,278 posts)I think they should have tried harder to score in the overtime rather than putting all theireggs in the PK basket.
Still a good match and maybe a wakeup call for Brazil.

(53,012 posts)The players and coach would have to be on the first flight out of Brazil. All that money spent on the cup and then to have them lose in the knock-out round; they never would have lived it down.

(101,265 posts)If that had been 3 inches lower, it would have gone down as one of the all-time great World Cup goals, given the timing.

(39,345 posts)Unforgettable. Plus you had the entire nation of Brazil on the edge of a nervous breakdown. I didn't know who to root for and my heart goes out to the Chileans. One of the most emotional sporting events I've ever seen.

(39,345 posts)Nobody's rolling like Spain in '10. Maybe Holland, but they could very well lose to Mexico, which would be lovely.

(53,012 posts)Yes, I know I'm foolish. I just couldn't put Germany over Brazil in the semi-final. I went with my heart over my head. I have Argentina as the other semi-finalists. If Brazil does get to the finals and they meet Argentina, it will be intense. Those two countries hate each other.
BeyondGeography
(39,345 posts)Much moreso than the US, because I learned to love the game when I was there as a student/slacker for four years over 30 years ago watching Michel Platini work his magic in midfield and have stuck with them through Cup tragedies and the Zidane-inspired triumphs since. They are on track to face Germany in the quarters, which will be as deep as they've played them since 1986. That was four years after one of the best games in the history of any sport, France/Germany in the semis in 1982. In that game, which they lost, they went up 3-1 in overtime and kept attacking. One of those, "the heart has its reasons which reason does not understand," moments that they specialize in.
In the Cup, France's history is to either lay an egg or go very far. This year, they have the talent to go deeper but this group is still relatively untested and could easily lose Monday to Nigeria. They could just as easily make it to the semis. To complicate matters, my wife is German-born and raised and we will have to watch on separate television sets on Friday if the two teams meet.
As for the winner, if it's not France, I would love it if we could have a new Cup champion from a nation that hasn't won it before. The way this tournament has gone it would be fitting.

(53,012 posts)I first watched football there. It was obligatory. I picked Argentina to face Brazil in the final, but if I had been going with my head I would have picked Germany instead of Brazil.
I think it highly likely France and Germany will meet.

(21,925 posts)I think their 1982 team is the best World Cup team I've ever seen. They had legendary players like Platini, Rocheteau, and Tigana and made the quarter finals, losing to Germany on penalty kicks. The play of that team, with magical passing was just beautiful. I saw the 1982 matches on Mexican TV and I remember how impressed the Mexican announcers were with the beauty of their play, using the word "hermoso" over and over to describe their amazing intricate passing. This year I'll be glad if they make the quarter finals as the competition is tough and they're missing their best player Ribery, who stayed home with a bad back.

(39,345 posts)I love your response; beauty is why I'll always find it easy to root for France. But it's also the sincere appreciation that so many people show for the artistry of the game that gives world football its immense soul. When the better angels are doing their thing on the field and the stakes are as high as they are with the Cup, the ride is irresistible.
