COUNCIL BLUFFS — Michele Fleckenstein, an East Coast native who now lives in Council Bluffs, sees a growing community of gay and transgender residents in Council Bluffs and Omaha.

“It shows no matter where you go, there will be people who accept it, and that’s enough for me,” Fleckenstein, 21, said Saturday.

She and her girlfriend, Danielle Morris, 21, also of Council Bluffs, were among roughly 500 people dotting the streets of downtown Council Bluffs to watch pride flags, drag queens, proud people and even a rainbow-colored shaggy dog in the parade for the 2014 Heartland Pride Festival.

A record-setting 41 parade floats, since the metro area’s first official Pride Parade in 1988, moved along Pearl Street. Organizations represented included the Council Bluffs Community Alliance, Union Pacific, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, area churches and several others.

Have you ever seen pics of a gay pride event that wasn't just full of smiles and love? Compare that to any gathering of bigots.
