Stephen Colbert is continuing his "Colbert Report" war with Amazon, objecting to the online retailers "scorched earth" negotiation tactics with Colbert's publisher, Hachette. (Comedy Central)
By Kristi Turnquist | kturnquist@oregonian.com
After declaring war on Amazon for its "scorched Earth" negotiation tactics with his publisher, Hachette, Stephen Colbert boasted about a victory on Thursday's "The Colbert Report."
Earlier this month, Colbert, in his flamboyant, grandiose onscreen persona, called on readers to rebel against Amazon, which wasn't allowing pre-orders of "California," by first-time novelist Edan Lepucki.
Colbert exhorted his fans to go to his website and pre-order copies of Lepucki's book, via Portland-based Powell's Books. As The Oregonian's Elliot Njus reported, Colbert's call to arms gave Powell's a huge boost in online sales.
On the Thursday "Colbert Report," the host boasted that his campaign to send readers to the independent bookseller had scored bigtime, with "California" holding down the No. 1 spot on the Powell's bestseller list for a week.

a few hours there every time I visit the city. Whatever else I may be in Portland for, I don't go home without a trip to Powell's.
