Hillary Clinton book blocked in China

Chinese publishers have declined to purchase the rights to Hillary Clinton's book "Hard Choices," which include passages critical of the Chinese government, Simon & Schuster President Jonathan Karp said in a statement.

“We regret that no Chinese publishers has been allowed to translate and distribute ‘Hard Choices’ by Hillary Rodham Clinton. Simon & Schuster is extremely disappointed that the English-language edition is not available in mainland China, despite our efforts to export the book to the region," Karp said.

As first reported by BuzzFeed, the book won't be available in mainland China because no publisher is willing to distribute it in Chinese or English. That's likely due to the fact that the former secretary of state criticizes the Chinese government in her book and spends a chapter on Chen Guangcheng, the blind Chinese dissident and civil rights activist who in 2012 sought asylum in the United States. Neighboring Taiwan and Hong Kong are selling the book, which is posting strong international sales.

"`Hard Choices’ is a valuable inside account of how world leaders, including those in China, confront challenges, and, as Secretary Clinton writes in the book, some of the hardest choices facing China today regard protecting human rights and free expression," Karp said in the statement. "We hope that the Chinese government will permit Secretary Clinton’s important book to be available to readers in China.”
