Why do we hate the poor?

Good commentary to read and to pass on, especially to those espousing great "American values."

Kim Redigan: Why do we hate the poor?
June 29, 2014 Comments

Today, families in Detroit, living under an emergency manager imposed by a governor committed to privatizing every inch of the state, are having their water shut off. A few days ago, the United Nations, at the behest of local activists, issued a statement on the shutoffs.

This is what it’s come to – appealing to an international body to uphold the basic human right to water.

The situation in Detroit is, of course, a result of systemic injustices deeply rooted in racism, injustices that have been analyzed by minds far better than mine.

I am honestly trying to understand the hatred that is reserved for the poor in this country, hatred as deep and noxious as a tar sands trail.

The UNICEF charter only allows it to work in third world countries, it is forbidden to operate in the US or a lot of the world in developed nations - but after Katrina - the US had to ask for help setting up schools in New Orleans - yep, we are well on the way to becoming a third world state and some people really like that idea.

UNICEF is there for New Orleans

Did you know Hurricane Katrina was so catastrophic, in fact, that it marked the first time in history UNICEF was asked to assist in an emergency on American soil? Immediately, UNICEF set out to build an international task force with assistance from partner organizations including the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Health Organization and three UN interagency teams.

Funds raised by the U.S. Fund for UNICEF added crucial support to the recovery effort. Within two weeks, 935 School-in-a-Box kits and 740 recreation kits were flown in from UNICEF’s central warehouse in Copenhagen.

We hate the poor so that capitalists can pay crap wages to their workers and give them shitty working conditions and fire them when they get hurt on the job and steal their pensions. That is why we hate the poor.
