2,000 could lose food stamps in Racine County. WI

http://www.stevenspointjournal.com/story/news/local/2014/06/29/lose-food-stamps-racine-county/11727525/

RACINE – About 2,000 Racine County residents in the state's FoodShare program will soon have to work or enroll in a worker-training program to continue receiving food stamps.

The change was part of Gov. Scott Walker's 2013-2015 budget. Republicans said it would give people an incentive to find work and eventually move off the program, while Democrats called it a mean-spirited attack on poor people.

The new law, which takes effect statewide on Jan. 1, is being rolled it out in Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties Tuesday to help work out any kinks, The Journal Times of Racine reported.

A federal requirement mandates that healthy adults with no dependents do some kind of work for 20 hours per week to continue receiving food stamps. Wisconsin used to have a waiver exempting it from the requirement, but the state eliminated the exemption in 2013.

a friend of mine was getting food stamps back in the 1990s and was complaining about the work requirement. He quit food stamps because he didn't want to work for the $110 a month in benefits he was getting.

Scotty and his rubber stamp legislature got rid of the waiver recently. When all is said and done Wisconsin's looking at 32,000 people losing thier food stamps.

where I lived in the 1990s.

And people, just like my friend, don't HAVE to lose their food stamps. Unless there are not enough work opportunities or training programs.

My friend was set up with a job at the college cafeteria, but he didn't want to do it.

Sadly, I think that describes just about every U.S. state nowadays.

I'm looking at that situation now to keep my SNAP benefits. The benefits are $189/month in Texas.

80 hours of volunteer work a month for $189, only making about $2 an hour then.
