Black men aged 15-24 are 16 times more likely to die of gunshot wounds than non-Hispanic whites. While only 20 percent of gunshot victims are women, the vast majority of them are killed by current or former romantic partners.
Those sobering statistics are in a comprehensive report on gun violence compiled by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-IL, released Wednesday. The report that Kelly called the first Congressional analysis of gun violence, makes several recommendations, including treating gun violence as a mental health issue.
Po Murray, vice chairman of the Newtown Action Alliance, said in the report there have been 57 school shootings since Adam Lanza blasted his way into Sandy Hook Elementary on Dec. 14, 2012, killing 20 first-graders and six educators.

I am sure that gun nuts all over feel that those numbers are a small price to pay for their right to kill. Their right to kill is much more important than all those who have died right to life.

(21,549 posts)this chart makes it look like open carry is legal in all but 4 states. Is that right?

(6,324 posts)I know open carry was legal here in NC long before the concealed carry law was passed. Never really was much of an issue.
You still see it, but since people gained the option of concealed carry most have moved in that direction.

(1,269 posts)The bigger mental health issue, and the one that we can control, is the denial of people who can have knowledge of these statistics and still promote weapons for the public. That's emotional greed to the point of being mentally unhealthy .

(7,408 posts)Something like 85% of gun violence involves handguns yet there is never any push to regulate the most popular choice in violent gun crimes. Why is that?
Lee-Lee
(6,324 posts)Handguns are common, and in common usage. It's much harder to demonize an object that a voter has at home.
Attacking assault weapons is easy politician fodder, and produces much better sound bites that are going to alienate a much smaller set of voters.
And many, many gun control advocates have handguns, many also have concealed carry licenses and/or for the wealthy security that carries handguns. So banning them isn't what they want...
