He presents the benign face of the old south oligarch and was resting on the laurels of his seniority and the privileges that go with that. "

The author bemoans the lost and admirable distinctions that once distinguished the differences between the Dem/Reps. Hell, I can remember casting my first vote for Eisenhower and I only voted for him because my father, a dyed-in-the-wool working class Dem, told me to. I can also remember him warning me not to vote for Nixon who he warned would be a disgrace and cause ruin to the country.
