Why are contraceptive pills carved out of insurance contracts as a separate entity? Or on the other hand why are blood pressure pills, cholesterol pills etc., etc. not carved out for special handling?

It sets a precedent that could possibly allow employers to exempt all sorts of things from their plans, depending on what "religion" their corporation happens to be.

My memory is that my wife's pills were always covered and not as an add on or an extra.
