In a little reported side note to the Hobby Lobby story that has dominated the headlines, all nine members of the Supreme Court of the United States agreed that private health insurers can offer their members incentives such as free iPhones, airplane tickets and even cash if they will agree to take the so called "morning after pill", get an IUD inserted or use some other form of birth control that will save their insurer from having to cover a costly pregnancy.
"As a practicing Catholic, I don't like it," said Justice Alito. "But United Health is a corporation, and as such it has a First Amendment right to post a profit---excuse me, guarantee of free speech, even if that free speech consists of bribes to kill the unborn."
Said Justice Sotomayor "If Blue Cross Blue Shield wants to pay its members to have safe sex, I see nothing wrong with that. The insurance industry leads the way in public health initiatives in this country. But I do draw the line at IUD string checks by insurance reps. They'll just have to take the member's word that the device has not fallen out."
