(16,095 posts)Husband says that lots of crops have been damaged and water is over a lot of roads on his trip from Des Moines home.
Trees down and wind damage here in Belle Plaine (40 miles or so West of Cedar Rapids). Heard it was worse North of here.
Power is back though, which is good.

(778 posts)It rained pretty good here for awhile, you could here the wind roaring above us, however the trees hardly moved. It was really mild winds at ground level. A 1/2 mile or so west of us and about the same east of us....major wind damage. south and north of us, major hail damage. Strange weather.......

(37,364 posts)The rain has been torrential and the winds so high. I have limbs down and a flooded back yard. Our garage has water inside but the house is okay. This was one scary storm.

(37,364 posts)It continued to storm up until the middle of the night. Now we have heavy fog. However, the evening storms were rough too but not as violent as the one that blew through during the afternoon. There was a death about four miles north of us in Fairfax where a building collapsed with a man inside. Highway 151 north of Fairfax is closed because a bridge collapsed. A couple of teens were sucked into a storm drain in Cedar Rapids and they are still searching for one for one of them.
There is so much water everywhere. The ground is totally saturated. Lots of down trees, toppled because of a combination of high winds and saturated grounds. North of Mt. Vernon, a sink hole opened and dropped a section of Hwy 1 and two vehicles into a deep hole. More flooding to come over the next week and there are concerns that the water in the Coralville Reservoir will top the spillway again as it did in 1993.
This is all kind of surreal especially since last year we were in severe drought conditions and got no rain all summer. Hope everyone is okay this morning.

(946 posts)Not a lot, but it rained a long time. I fixed my lawnmower saturday just in time for it to start raining.
I heard there was 4" hail reported west of Des Moines. My Inlaws got hammered just north of Fort Dodge.

(20,629 posts)Got to work this AM in the midst of a blinding rain; had to wait a good 15-20 minutes just to make the walk inside without getting completely soaked. By 10:00 AM, the sun was shining and it was just beautiful outside!
After lunch, the skies darkened quickly, and it was obvious we were going to get slammed again. Of course, it hit shortly before I was about to leave work. I waited it out over an hour, and drove home in rain that wasn't terribly intense.
Fired up my grill to cook dinner around 7:30, and literally got hit with a "fire hose" of rain and wind when I opened my sliding glass door to put the food on! Shut it off, and re-started a bit later once that rain eased up, but it was still coming down pretty well. I'm still hearing occasional thunder-claps, even though the rain has nearly come to an end.
I think the official total is around 3" for the past 24 hours, but wouldn't be shocked if it's much higher in certain places.
