Today's ruling on Hobby Lobby was religious privilege at work...
Religion, as a type of belief system or ideology, gets special privileges under US law no other type of belief system gets. Why?
If a company wanted to opt out of contraceptive coverage for any conceivable reason OTHER than religion, they couldn't.
What the fuck is going on here?
Why is religion given so much deference and respect, to the point of being given advantages no other type of belief system gets?
I can't think of one good reason.
Religion should be treated the same as any other type of belief system or ideology under the law. It's discriminatory to anyone who doesn't have any religious beliefs, and in many cases to those with a minority religious belief.
Hobby Lobby can get away with being slightly theocratic in a majority Christian nation.
Religious privilege amplifies other types of privilege, and it's why it benefits conservatives so much, and it's why they keep pushing it so often.
Religion should get no special treatment, and if it takes a Constitutional Amendment to do so, I think it should be done.
