Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has posted a message directed at both fans and critics.
Boyega, 22, whose scene in the films teaser trailer led to some online criticism of a black Stormtrooper, appeared to address those comments on his Instagram page Saturday.
"To whom it may concern Get used to it," he wrote. After that sentence, he included a smiley-face emoticon.
Boyega, who starred in 2011s Attack the Block, also thanked fans for their positive feedback. Thank you for all the love and support, Boyegas message read. Im in the movie, but as a Star Wars fan, Im very excited.

That's crazy. Since when is there a law written in stone that Stormtroopers must be white?

Only good parts about that trilogy.

(3,918 posts)Except for Boba. He was made especially for Jango and did not have that built in flaw. Around the time of The Clone Wars they stopped producing the clones on Kamino.
And yes, I too am a geek.

(29,414 posts)In Episode IV (and V, and VI) we never saw an unmasked Stormtrooper; they were always "faceless."
Still, that's better than being surrounded by assholes:

(2,969 posts)They wouldn't be racist. If you're willing to serve the Emperor obediently, then all are welcome.
Such is usually how empires work, when they're run competently.
We forget that the deepest evil is often meritocratic.

Blue_Adept
(6,393 posts)Just proves they're not watching Star Wars Rebels, which is the new series and establishing post-prequel pre-a new hope continuity. We've got it there where there aren't any real clones left at that point and we're seeing the Imperial Academy and training - which had a variety of different ethnic characters.
There are those that are legitimately surprised because they've grown up with the prequels as their first view of the franchise and never really clicked that the clones were phased out. But a good chunk of those "gaining fame" over this are just plain assholes looking to create controversy or are pretty much just assholes in general.

(37,364 posts)years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. They enjoyed it too and my son was into the Lego Star Wars sets for a while and then he grew up, went to college, got a degree and a job, and got married and settled down. Yesterday evening I watched a news story on one of the channels in which they were telling me that people lined up to see a trailer for a movie that won't come out for a year. That there was one theater full of people who played the trailer over and over again and analyzed the darned thing frame by frame with a panel of fans on the stage. Pan to the panel...all middle aged people with receding hairlines and beginning to acquire jowls. I do not get the needs for this type of fandom--not with a movie franchise or a singer or a product.

I was embarrassed to be in the audience of the Watto + Jar Jar Binks film. I half expected one of them to be Al Jolson in CGI. It was like watching a film written by Strom Thurman and then an editor changes only one or two words here and there -- sand people.

(845 posts)The sand 'people' are people that live in the sand. They are called 'Tusken Raiders'.
I agree with your pics from the prequels but what sparked outrage about the original characters?

(3,937 posts)Lucas seems to have mixed the obvious WWII Nazi references, including Stormtroopers, with only ONE black character/actor. Basically Darth Vader is Hitler but Lucas makes Hitler black. I don't remember outrage at the time. On my scorecard it was only after Jar Jar Binks that people went back and took another look at the whole series. JJB was so over the top.
Lucas also makes the hero of the first film Aryan -- the blond haired, blue eyed Luke. So he has flipped the whole thing; an Aryan is the good guy and the leader of the space Nazis is Black.
In another twist, CNN loved the voice of evil so much that they created their tag: "This is CNN" using JEJ

The dogfights were also choreographed with WW2 footage.
