James Risen: He didn't become radical, the country did

I think my real change came after 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq. I was covering the CIA as a beat then. And to me, it was fascinating talking to CIA people right after the invasion of Iraq and right before the invasion of Iraq, because it was kind of like privately talking to a bunch of Howard Deans. They were all radicalized against what Bush was doing.

To me it was wild to hear all of these people inside the intelligence community, especially in 2003, 2004, who were just going nuts. They couldn’t believe the radical change the United States was going through, and that nobody was opposed to it. And that led me to write my last book, State of War, because I was hearing things from within the intelligence community and the U.S. government that you weren’t hearing publicly from anybody. So that really led me to realize—and to step back and look at—the radical departure of U.S. policy that has happened since 9/11 and since the invasion of Iraq.

To me, it’s not like I’ve been radicalized, I feel like I stayed in the same place and the country changed. The country became more radicalized in a different direction.

in response to the smearing and the government persecution that was promulgated by Risen's reporting....

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/02/AR2006060201060.html

Note that Risen was told by a federal judge that if he didn't give his sources, he would have to go to jail.....(and this was a decade ago!)

Only a libertarian like Glen Greenwald would think this guy is some sort of hero.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Rosen_%28journalist%29

Not to be confused with the American journalist for The New York Times, James Risen.

(snip)

James Rosen is an American journalist and television correspondent. He currently works as a Washington, D.C. correspondent for the Fox News Channel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Risen

James Risen (born c. 1955) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist for The New York Times who previously worked for the Los Angeles Times. He has written or co-written many articles concerning U.S. government activities and is the author or co-author of two books about the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and a book about the American public debate about abortion.

James Risen did in fact smear Wen Ho Lee, and was part of the 1.6 million dollar payout paid to him.

That was proven by Electric Monk upthread.

Did he work for Fox News? No?

I have absolutely no problem with you pushing the narrative that me making a mistake about where a person works is more important than the central issue that James Risen is a libertarian hero.... and he got that way on the back of an ethnic minority who had limited resources to fight back.

That indicates a helluva lot more about you than me.

now if you had a single fact to refute the Wen Ho Lee allegations you would post them wouldn't you?

If Al Gore had stood his ground and been a leader-in-exile, I would have been a loyal soldier for him and for this country.

And I would have fought for the Constitution if anyone at all had bothered to stand for it in Washington.

But we all failed. No one in the elite stood against Bush; no one in the military command said "Hell no!" to their treasonous commands; no one stood up and filled the moral vacuum. We all just went on our merry way.

Maybe I had a legitimate excuse in the fact that I was just a teenager, but I take responsibility anyway, because I knew the state of the country at the time. I didn't have faith in my fellow Americans. I retreated into internet trolling, skulking around GOP sites making their worm-like peons feel my anger. That's the best that I did.

Every hour, taxpayers in the United States are paying $10.54 million for Total Cost of Wars Since 2001

Every hour, taxpayers in the United States are paying $8.43 million for Homeland Security Since 9/11.

https://www.nationalpriorities.org/cost-of/

$20 MILLION DOLLARS PER HOUR. But all of a sudden Wen Ho Lee is very important. Sure.

This is the biggest ripoff in human history. Who reading this will benefit from a single dollar spent on this clusterF*?

The people complaining about WHL don't seem to care about Hillary and her vote for the Iraq war much. Or the countless innocents being drone bombed into the next life.

"I Cast My Vote With CONVICTION"!

Edit to add: James Risen won the 2014 Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for investigative journalism, particularly for demonstrating "courage in his commitment to protect his sources and combat pressures that would undermine his work and that of other journalists."

But to put it in very salient terms, every working wage-earner and taxpayer should be reminded of this fact: that of the taxes they pay, this is the portion that is going to support war/fear-mongering industries.
