Missouri police condemn footballers’ gesture in support of Michael Brown

Officers’ union calls for St Louis players to be disciplined over
‘hands-up’ gesture and threaten boycott of NFL advertisers

Jon Swaine in New York
The Guardian, Monday 1 December 2014 10.36 GMT

A Missouri police union has condemned players from the St Louis Rams football team for making “hands-up” gestures on the field in solidarity with Michael Brown, the unarmed 18-year-old shot dead in Ferguson, and threatened to boycott NFL advertisers in response.

The St Louis Police Officers Association claimed that officers found the actions of Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, Kenny Britt, Jared Cook, Chris Givens and Tre Mason to be “tasteless, offensive and inflammatory”, and demanded that they be disciplined.

Five of the players emerged for their game against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday with their hands aloft, a gesture used by protesters who claim that Brown was surrendering when he was shot dead by officer Darren Wilson on 9 August. A grand just last week decided not to indict Wilson.

What do the police not understand about the fact that those players have the right to protest? The police would serve us all better if they were to root out the corruption in their ranks.

For eleven years, appellant, Jeffrey Roorda, was a full-time commissioned police officer employed by respondent, City of Arnold (“City”), a city of the third classification located in Jefferson County, Missouri which has adopted a merit system of employment for its police officers pursuant to §?85.541.1 After an informal pre-termination hearing was held on the morning of June 20, 2001, Roorda was terminated by the City effective later that afternoon.

...

Due to his past disciplinary record, the seriousness of the false reports filed by Roorda, and the other Departmental General Order violations he had committed, Sgt. Shular recommended that Roorda be terminated.

What's "tasteless, offensive and inflammatory" is letting Wilson get away with murder.

Hands up for Mike Brown.

I think one can safely say that the fatal shooting of Michael Brown was also "tasteless, offensive and inflammatory."

So far, no one seems to have suffered any fatal consequences of the football players' action.

The same cannot, alas, be said for the actions of the St. Louis area police.

especially for people that do dirty jobs that most people would not do.

However, this bit of bullshit reminds me why many Unions started to fall; a bunch of people of the dominant skin complexion decided they did not want minorities, and therefore, the very prolelatariat that would have been the support for them, did not show.
