"New York is embroiled in two public conversations about race, policing and fairness in the justice system one taking place in the streets, the other among politicians and so far it looks like the demonstrators are presenting a far more relevant, compelling and insightful analysis than the gaggle of pols now rushing to catch up with the society they nominally lead.
In a style made famous by the Occupy Wall Street movement, the multi-racial groups of demonstrators taking to the streets each night dont have a central command structure or a neat list of policies they want enacted. Marching under the slogan Black Lives Matter, they are demanding a broad shift in the way people think and feel about race and criminal justice a seemingly utopian request, but one that might actually address the core problem.
As President Obama put it in an interview with BET, A countrys conscience sometimes has to be triggered by some inconvenience."
