I am not a fan on John McCain. But his remarks on the torture report are worthy of respect and recognition. It would have been easy for him to engage in blind apologetics. He did not. Respect where respect is due.

(1,596 posts)I don't understand how when a shitbag that does nasty shitty things as a habit, might do something half decent and is elevated onto some platform of appreciation.

(75,480 posts)It doesn't make him less the crazy old coot that he is. It's how sociopaths react. They have no empathy for the suffering of others unless it's done to them.

(12,754 posts)None of this information on torture is new. Seeing it in this format is new, but everyone who had two brain cells knew this was going on. Why didn't McCain call for impeachment?

(10,201 posts)I used to have sympathy.
Then I was hungry.
I now have empathy.
I can have only a small amount of empathy for those who were tortured. But I have a great sympathy for them. I cannot imagine myself in their place to understand their feelings. I do however have a great bit of care and sorrow for their feelings, and unimaginable grief. But that would be best described as sympathy.

(12,803 posts)Where we tend to differ from "conservatives" is that we have sympathy they all too often lack.
If John McCain was never a POW I sincerely doubt he'd have the same stance on torture.
