Clemson Suspended A Frat After They Threw A Gang-Themed Party Called 'Cripmas'

http://www.businessinsider.com/r-clemson-university-fraternity-suspended-over-gang-themed-cripmas-party-2014-12

A Clemson University fraternity has been suspended indefinitely by its national organization after some of its members threw a gangster-themed Christmas party over the weekend seen by many as racially insensitive. The Saturday night off-campus party, dubbed "Clemson Cripmas," was thrown by the South Carolina school's chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which school officials say has no black members.

The Crips are group of mainly African-American street gangs founded in Los Angeles in the late 1960s. Many of those attending wore bandanas, oversized T-shirts and low-slung pants, and were shown in photos posted on social media sites making what appeared to be gang signs.

"The decision of a few brothers to hold this type of social event is inexcusable and completely inappropriate," the national Sigma Alpha Epsilon organization said in a statement announcing the suspension posted on its website on Sunday....

"Many of our students of color were infuriated, outraged and upset by the 'Cripmas' party," Wiles said. "Some white students didn't think it was a big deal and didn't understand why there was such a strong reaction." The incident comes in the wake of the suspension of all on-campus social activities for Clemson's 24 fraternities in September after the death of a 19-year-old fraternity pledge who died of a head injury following a fall from a highway bridge into a river.

Do you think I'll get banned? What for? Be specific, if you can.

You know, this would explain the recent thread on DU's decline. Nothing like being here for a year, taking exception to the notion that having a criminal themed party is essentially having a black-themed party (the notion is racist and offensive to rational thought in the extreme), then yet again having some random internet person coyly imply/threaten that I'll be gone soon for daring to examine the material posted in an OP with a critical view. I suppose the only response you may understand is simply "Enjoy your private echo chamber".

It tells black students "you're successful, you've done right in life, but we still get to shit on you over your fellow blacks' sins."

Are criminals above reproach/criticism/mockery because some people are unable to distinguish depictions of criminals and depictions of blacks? Good news Crips/Bloods/Vice Lords! You're above reproach because you're now apparently representative of blacks as a whole!

Won't somebody PLEEASE think of the gangbangers?!?!

especially with the BLACK MOBS ARE PLOTTING TO BEAT UP WHITE PEOPLE moral panic, there is this "black people = bad people" prejudice that spreads, largely unchallenged. In contrast, the "zoot suit" type of gangster is artistically romanticized whether in The Godfather or The Sopranos.

That's a creative way to rationalize an obvious and illustrative racism on display by the fraternity.

Though it's not valid, does not hold any meaningful premise or conclusion, and dramatically lacks any objective sources, it is indeed, creative if nothing else...

I have let gawd and everybody know how angry I am about this. They are taking it seriously and are holding meetings to determine the climate for minorities on campus.
I just may 'visit'.

This is from those execrable frats. The Greeks were abhorrent and useless when I was there. Many of them are suspended because of other shenanigans. I hope they close them all permanently. Privileged, stupid little shits.

There was a sorority on the top floor of my dorm. I crossed swords with the Dean of Women a lot about the preferential treatment they wanted. She loved me.
I wish I had given them more hell!

A sorority member I knew used to say,"I'm free, white, and 21." That is their ignorant view in a nutshell. I gave her hell too.

They seem to be nothing but a haven for cruel, self-centered criminal drunks.

My cousin was bullied badly by some sorority girls. Not just name calling - law enforcement had to get involved.

As a product of one of them, I can assure you that I am not a "cruel self centered criminal drunk" Never have been, and never would have set foot in a such a "haven". Some rotten fruit doesn't make the whole orchard bad.

I doubt very much that black people particularly want to be associated with the Crips, or have murderous street gangs defended on the grounds that mocking them is offensive to the black community. That seems incredibly, massively racist and patronizing.

Mocking a street gang is insensitive to its victims, but so is dressing up like pirates or Vikings or Roman legionaries.

with the requisite photos posted to social media...And it always has the standard boilerplate apology from the national office, plus a quote like this:

The thing of it is evidently nobody is learning their lesson since everybody is still doing it

that my generation does these days...if they were going to be stupid like this, the least they could've did was name their thing "Gangmas" (although Cripmas was more of a play on words), since some of them also wore red, and Crips are known for wearing blue.
