but when you're a minority or poor person who lives paycheck to paycheck, have children and no real access to legal representation, and no way to pay for bail, you're going to try to talk your way out to prevent them from completely fucking you over. If you don't talk they can and will arrest you on some bullshit charge, place your children in foster care and if you rent, you stand to lose your apartment and all of your possessions while you rot in jail waiting for a preliminary hearing which could be months down the road.

For some its just not as easy as "I want my lawyer".
