French gourmets have traditionally shunned hot, spicy food so they may be a little piqued by a study indicating that curry-loving men have higher testosterone.
Scientists at the highly-respected University of Grenoble have published a report suggesting that regular consumption of chili peppers may raise levels of the hormone, which is believed to make men more adventurous, enterprising and sexually active.
Laurent Begue, one of the authors of the study, said: "These results are in line with a lot of research showing a link between testosterone and financial, sexual and behavioural risk-taking."
The research paper, titled "Some Like It Hot", is to be published in the US-based journal "Physiology and Behavior".

(4,879 posts)It reminds me of the time a friend of mine said, that pepper from my garden could not possibly be hot enough to be too hot.
I thought he was going to die right there on my living room floor. We had to call an ambulance.
It was just a lowly habanero.
Thanks Fumesucker.

(14,733 posts)The occasional jalapeno or equivalent, not habaneros or ghost or scorpion peppers. I guess that means I've only got mild testosterone and don't take a lot of risks.

(19,473 posts)and they're trying unconsciously to raise their testosterone from sub-par levels.
That's why some of us don't like spicy foods. We don't need them.
It's science.

(18,318 posts)the next day. Two nights ago, I served up 2 doz. Dove "poppers" (half a jalapeno with cheese, wrapped in dove breast & bacon over a mod. hot fire). Got a marriage proposal out of that, but fortunately nothing came of it: next day, the MGM Lion had taken over the plumbing -- not too romantic.

I once injured myself cooking with habenaro peppers though - that's pretty manly right ? (side note: when cooking with habenaros wear gloves or hand protection of some kind).

(38,187 posts)If you can handle Scorpions, you can take the heat. I still want to try a Carolina Reaper. I live right here in the Carolinas and have yet to be able to find one to buy and add to my chili. If I ever do though, I'm going to try it. I love peppers. I can't seem to get enough. I can't believe some people are saying habanero is considered really spicy. I thought those were more in the low to medium category for hot.

Then again, the biggest blowhard jerkweed I know has a meat & potatoes with an iceberg lettuce salad on the side washed down with light beer diet. Anything other than salt and pepper on food is a communist plot as far as he's concerned.
