Police: Texas Officer Kills Man Holding Spoon

TEXARKANA, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are investigating a police shooting after an officer killed a burglary suspect who was holding a spoon.

A Texarkana police spokesman says the officer fatally shot 35-year-old Dennis Grigsby on Monday after a homeowner called 911 to report a break-in. He says the officer confronted Grigsby in the home's dimly lit garage and shot him.

Police say the Texarkana man aggressively advanced toward the officer with a 7-inch metal object that looked like a knife. They say he ignored the officer's command to stop. Police say they later determined the object was a spoon.

The suspect's mother, Evelyn Grigsby, says she and her son lived across the street from the home and that he had a mental illness.

The officer's identity hasn't been released.

He aggressively advanced.

He ignored the officer's command to stop.

Change spoon to gun, knife, wallet, phone, license, reaching into waistband, and the outcome is the same.

Change the name of the person murdered.

Change the name of the town and state.

I bet every police department in the country has a form letter to cover this.

The same story, time after time.

too big. They would need to spend all their time at the gym. When you see 40 and 50 year olds with bodies like 20 year old body builders, you have to wonder. I know fire fighters have a lot of time to work out, but I have see some older guys that are just too big to be natural weight training.

but now the home owner has to live with this as well. People are entitled to own things and not have them stolen (if that is what the "suspect" was doing), but I don't think I would want to kill someone over my belongings. Perhaps this is because I don't have anything of real value to steal, but it just doesn't seem like something I could live with.
My husband has tools in the garage that he locks up when we leave. I don't think he would want someone to be killed if they were trying to steal them.
Maybe some people think it is worth it, but I don't get it.

so he was just confused.

I agree though. Nothing in my garage is worth someone's life. We have expensive tools in there, but the theft of even expensive tools does not warrant the death penalty, let alone without trial.

Let's assume the guy was holding a knife. How about a well-placed shot to the leg if the officer is pissing his or her pants and must shoot something? Does it always have to be a lethal shot?

Agree that other targets would be better, maybe there should be an adjustment to add targets that have "takedown" spots that give credit.

When you train for a money shot to the heart, anything else is secondary in a moment of split second decision.

refer to something so serious as "play", it's not a game, and people are more than targets.
There is something wrong with training if LEO are framing it with sports of video game analogies instead acknowledging these are serious life and death decisions. Citizens should not be thought of as little more than targets.

If you've spent years perfecting the "kill shot", you're not very likely to seek alternatives in a stress situation.

I am in favor of different training that goes well beyond firearms.

To use another analogy, if your only tool is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.

If you don't need to kill them, then you don't need to shoot them in the first place. There are other solutions available.

Shooting to wound is "overkill" by definition.

WTF is wrong with these people. Next up, we'll see Wolf Shitzer on CNN interviewing some cop...

Wolf: When did you realize that you were in a dire predicament that required lethal force?
Officer: The moment I realized the wooden spork was made of maple. We've been trained to handle balsa and pine but, you know, maple is such a stronger wood. It's hard to fight off a guy who's got strong wood.

OK - sorry, I couldn't resist but in all seriousness, this is so f'ing insane.

They never say DROP whatever you have in your HAND, never, they say stop, stop what .
Shoot now and ask questions later.
Even if the guy did or was breaking the law, put your hands over your head, and get on your knees.
Again the training of these people is just lacking on the face of what is being reported.
What is in the training program
Apparently they don't have the beginning scenes from Hill Street Blues or Chips for example

You realize of course that people use spoons to eat, and with Obesity being the number one killer of our people, that meant that the spoon was in fact, a lethal weapon. It was a heart attack just waiting to happen man. We have to take action, I say don't just focus on the spoons, get the knives and forks too. We can't afford to waste a moment.
