gone as far as he can, within the constraints of an outmoded 1996 law that imposes stiff sanctions on Cuba in the pursuit of regime change.
Following months of secret negotiations with the Cuban government, President Obama on Wednesday announced sweeping changes to normalize relations with Havana, a bold move that ends one of the most misguided chapters in American foreign policy.
The administrations decision to restore full diplomatic relations, take steps to remove Cuba from the State Department list of countries that sponsor terrorism and roll back restrictions on travel and trade is a change in direction that has been strongly supported by this page. The White House is ushering in a transformational era for millions of Cubans who have suffered as a result of more than 50 years of hostility between the two nations.
These 50 years have shown isolation does not work, Mr. Obama said. Its time for a new approach.
Administration officials recognize that Congress is unlikely to take complementary steps toward a healthier relationship with Cuba anytime soon. But this move will inevitably inform the debate about the merits of engagement. In all likelihood, history will prove Mr. Obama right.

(20,226 posts)I suspect they will be a little more in the U.S. with taxes and everything. But having real Habanos - that alone should make restoring diplomatic relations worth it.

(33,688 posts)I enjoy a cigar every so often, and a friend in law school used to bring back some Davidoffs and Cohibas when he went to visit his dad in London. He saved those for celebrating the end of finals. They are a marvelous smoke.

(2,957 posts)...because now Democrats running to succeed Pres Obama will have to go on record of where they stand on this. So, the courage won't stop with President Obama - Democratic candidates will have to display some courage as they run.

Does this effectively remove a wedge issue from the Republican arsenal?
If so, it could go some way towards making Florida yet more blue.

(26,219 posts)I would have expected something I posted earlier - that it is a win/win - he takes a stand, but because of the GOP Senate takeover, knows he has nothing to lose. History will note that he took the stand.
We saw some odd agreements on CRomnibus and need WAY more of this from him. It could be shocking to see what passes in the next 2 years.
Spaghetti on the wall, Mr. POTUS - toss it up there and see what sticks.
