Elizabeth Warren: An Honest & Courageous Woman, in a Cowardly & Centrist Democratic Party

Elizabeth Warren: An Honest and Courageous Woman in a Cowardly and Centrist Democratic Party
H. A. Goodman
12/17/14

What does the Democratic Party stand for nowadays?

We're the Anti-war Party, right?

Okay, stop laughing.

We're a foil to the corporatists in the GOP, correct? We'll stand up for the middle class and ensure that the same people who caused the financial collapse in 2008 won't hurt us once more, right?

We're different from Lindsay Graham, who stated the following about Elizabeth Warren's refusal to accept a spending bill that caters to Wall Street interests:

"If you follow the lead of the senator of Massachusetts ... people are not going to believe you are mature enough to run the place," Graham said. "Don't follow her lead. She's the problem."

We're brave enough, as a political party, to stand up to the snide comment of a Republican leader in the Senate, aren't we?

Nope, try again.

Instead, we've proven that we can indeed "run the place" in the manner the GOP and Wall Street deem commendable. The cowardice of cold pragmatism rules the Democratic Party in 2014. Compromise is great, but just don't compromise the economy in the name of bargaining or reaching across the aisle.

Some true believing liberals might say that Democrats represent the eloquence and determination of Sen. Elizabeth Warren. In an NPR Interview, Warren highlights the points introduced in her now legendary Senate floor speech:

....I hope Sen. Warren simply says, "I told you so," the next time Wall Street brings this nation to its knees because of reckless speculation. Just like in 1999 with the end Glass-Steagall, a Democratic President (with urging from the GOP) is today laying the groundwork for another economic catastrophe, so it's good to know that both Republicans and Democratic can at least agree on some things. Of course Elizabeth Warren should be the next president of this great nation, but I stopped believing in the tooth fairy and Santa Claus a long time ago.

Some things are too good to be true in reality, and Warren's honesty, integrity, boldness, and value system make her a liability in the Democratic Party and American politics....

1. And yet in spite of the narrative, most Democrats voted against the spending bill and the largest

Democratic caucus in the House is the Progressive Caucus, which is full of Democrats who have been making correct, progressive decisions since Warren was still voting for Reagan and Bush. To pretend they do not exist and she's swimming alone against some great tide of Democratic opposition is poppycock and just the sort of hyperbole that is streaming out of her boosters, but never, ever out of Warren. She' never make such a claim because it is offensive to dozens and dozens of Democrats, many of them more liberal than Warren and most of them with a longer track record as Democrats than Warren's.

2. Too bad our Democratic President lobbied for it and will sign it with a smile.

I hear ya though. The republican wing of the Democratic party is just drowning out the good ones.

4. And now this is about Obama? Because the fact is that my Senators are more liberal than Warren

Another fact is that my Representative, Peter DeFazio along with still current members Maxine Waters and Bernie Sanders established the Progressive Caucus in 1987, while Elizabeth Warren's' honesty, integrity, boldness, and value system' was still a Republican touting Republican policy on all fronts. So telling the story as if she's Emma Goldman among the Running Dog Lackeys of the Machine is just a bit much.
I would heartily suggest the end of slamming or ignoring other good Democrats. If you have to pretend that people who were founding the Progressive caucus while your candidate was voting for George Bush do not exist or are not as liberal as she is, perhaps that is for lack of something meaningful to say.
I will tell you this. When I speak directly to Warren's office or ask about her through channels, the answers I get are far more pleasing to me than the message I get from those who are attempting to boost her candidacy. What I'm saying is that the truth is pretty good, and thus the bullshit tactics are not necessary.
Case in point. She was a Reagan supporter. Reagan was a bigot and an idiot who ignored the AIDS crisis and did not say a word about it until there were more than 20,000 dead. Warren voted for him a second time when there were over 5,000 dead and he had done nothing, said nothing. I mention this on DU, and her boosters either bring up Hillary who I don't care about, or they attempt to minimize AIDS and the overall rottenness of Reagan. 'Was AIDS really that bad?' one of them asked. It pissed me off so much that I picked up the phone to DC.
On the other end was no evasion about the shit head decisions of the past. There was in fact a set of actual current actions Warren is taking which are specifically redemptive for some of the Republican shitheady. She is aware she was wrong, her mind is changed and also she is the sort who knows she should do something to right the times she was wrong.
Here, her supporters made me want to vomit. There, I found a Senator I can respect and might come to really strongly support. Also a Senator who does not see herself as alone on the Hill at all. Because she's not.
So whatever. Obama. Hillary. Learn to talk about Warren when people ask about Warren. Learn to talk about Congress when people talk about Congress. It's a step in the right direction.
Negative campaigning is a giant mistake, almost always. In primaries it is deadly shit. It signals weakness, meanness and an absence of strong material about your own candidate. If you couple that with 'Was AIDS really that bad' and calling other Democrats dinos when your candidate was a long time Republican and you won't talk about that....you wind up doing great harm to your choice at the very time when what you need to be doing is expanding her universe of possible supporters, alienating no one.
But whatever. You guys have a narrative. I do not see it as helpful to Warren, nor to Democrats. But that's just my opinion.

5. You're talking to me like I wrote the article. I agree with it, we've been talking here

about the EXACT same thing, so I posted it.

I hate that I helped elect another democratic president that will sign deregulations for wall street AGAIN. allowing another crash down the road. This is not why I'm a democrat.

I'm a democrat for people like Elizabeth Warren. And unlike the author, I believe in fairy tales. At least until March. If she hasn't entered the race by then, I will put the nail in & hang up my rainbow.

...Maybe you should pen something for Huffpo since you feel that strongly about it.

You went after the Democratic party as a whole, he schooled you on the facts.

If you cannot see what you did, you should not be posting on a discussion board.

I won't even get into the tripe of the article in the OP.

building a strawman. There are some great progressive Democrats in Congress but they don't speak out very loud, like Sen Warren does, which is essential at this time. We have to win the hearts and minds of the general public.
