A Christmas Present from the Republicans.

I almost never agree with the Republicans or their positions, but I have to make an exception for their stance on the Marketplace Fairness Act.

The bill, already passed by the Democratic Senate, would require sales taxes to be collected on all Internet purchases, even if the seller has no physical presence in the buyer's state.

Republicans in the House are reluctant to pass the bill. John Boehner said that it wouldn't be addressed before Congress adjourns.

The GOP is saving us as much as $100 for every $1,000 we spend online for Christmas presents.

Sales taxes are REGRESSIVE; they hit moderate and low income people the hardest. I wonder if Republicans realize this? Do Democrats realize it?

For years, Republican policies have resulted in the cutting of PROGRESSIVE taxes and the raising of REGRESSIVE taxes. Ronald Reagan's huge tax cuts on the rich were offset in part by various state and local taxes, which tend to be regressive or less progressive.

Ohio governor John Kasich plans to eliminate the progressive state income tax and replace it partly with a sales tax increase, helping the rich and hurting the unemployed and people on fixed incomes. Then he will pretend to wonder why economic inequality keeps increasing.

Should Democrats support the Marketplace Fairness Act?

This is actually a huge handout to giant corporations and crushes small biz that can't compete. How about a level playing field.

* No shipping charges.
* No waiting for items to arrive.
* No hassle with delivery, such as having to be home to receive product, or having it stolen from porch.
* No hassle with returning items.

This would be a HUGE, NEW tax! And it would hurt low and moderate income people the most!

And what right does your state have to charge you for a transaction you made with someone in another state?

Regressive taxes are Republican. As Democrats we should fight for PROGRESSIVE taxation. And we should resist the Republican practice of increasing economic inequality by replacing progressive taxes with regressive taxes.
