I've followed a number of posts on DU concerning whether Hillary Clinton would be a good Democratic nominee in 2016. To my dismay, I see quite a few people - progressives, like me - who claim to see little difference between Clinton and most of the likely Republican candidates. She's corporatist and doesn't have the best interests of the average person in mind.
This may be true. To borrow from Molly Ivins' comment about Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton is not my kind of Democrat.
I'm not going to try to predict what will happen in 2016. I would like to see Elizabeth Warren run, but she says she isn't. Someone like Bernie Sanders would be awesome. I have no idea who will get the nomination. But let''s assume Hillary Clinton is the nominee. If so, I would hope that all of us calling ourselves progressives would campaign vigorously for her nomination.
To those who think Clinton is no different from a Republican, I have two words: Supreme Court.
By 2020, four of the currently-serving justices will be in their 80's. There's a reasonable chance some or all will have left the court by the end of the next presidential administration. And if that person serves a second term in the White House, she or he will probably deal with additional vacancies.
Bill Clinton, for all of his triangulation and capitulation to Republican policies, gave us Ginsburg and Breyer. Obama, who has also governed more like a Republican than I would like, has given us Sotomayor and Kagan. Compare these with the clowns seated by the Bushes, and you quickly see how much of a difference having a Democrat - even moderate Democrat - in the White House makes.
Why not vote for a third-party candidate, you ask? Why not vote Green, or support an independent run by someone like Sanders? Because that would ensure a Republican victory.
I understand the counterargument - things won't get better unless there's a viable progressive on the ticket. But right now, that's not the world we live in. Our government is currently based on the balance of power of two parties. A parliamentary system, with multiple parties building coalitions, has its benefits - but we don't have one, and we won't for the foreseeable future.
The conservative members of the Supreme Court have done far more damage than any Republican-led house of congress. Declining to vote for a Democrat - even one we would prefer not be on the ticket - will help ensure more Scalias and Alitos on the Supreme Court.
Anyway, that's my opinion, which is worth what you pay for it. I want a progressive president, and we should work our asses off to nominate one. But given a choice between a corporatist who will nominate good supreme court justices and one who will not, I'm going with the former.

(22,457 posts)Whereas I would work my arse off for Warren or Sanders or a more progressive candidate.
I'm in California, though, so honestly, I probably could vote third party and not be risking too much. If she's in trouble here, she's got way bigger problems than my vote.
No effort to push for her. Just a vote.
That's it.
If it was Sanders or Warren, they get my 110% effort to bring them to the position that they want.
Clinton? Meh. She has the dollars from Goldman-$achs. Don't need any more of my money that keeps falling in buying power.

No thanks, but have fun trying to convince progressives to vote, yet again for someone who is far from progressive.

(24,945 posts)insist on going where people you supposedly need cannot follow while pretending you have the same goals but must insist on forwarding a person substantially antithetical to them.
I said in 2012 my vote was for time to get our shit together, that bid has only further deteriorated from my perspective. No heads have put on straight, they are deeper down the rabbit hole and reduced to the Supreme Court hostage threats. A threat that seems to not even seriously consider reining in the surveillance state, reversing corporate dominance, strengthening and asserting civil liberties, controlling and demilitarizing the police, accountability for positions of authority, equality under the law, or anything really but abortion and as a figleaf, do nothing lip service for civil rights.
That's it! The full range of issues the court deals with is of the most flimsy concern and as such is something I'm forced to see as a hostage threat against abortion and essentially ONLY that, which is being used as the rallying cry to demand surrender in every other area of policy and expectation of those we elect.
Want solidarity? When are certain folks going to start offering any in this dynamic? Everything else is not just flotsam to be sacrificed on the alter of one issue that despite the Catbird seat for focus for a generation or two is slipping because the most impacted part of the population isn't even close to being on the same page and/or priority level about.
I strongly support choice but it isn't the king issue that makes all others pawns to be sacrificed.
We can and must do better than that and no I'm not going to knuckle under to hostage taking.

(2,963 posts)I really, really don't. The two-party system we have, combined with the input of money and a loud right-wing press, is all but guaranteed to make the whole thing tack rightward and give us candidates beholden to those special interests with the most money. But as long as this is the system we have, we have to be realistic.

You want to succumb the the regressive forces, give over our futures to corporate dividends and golden parachutes, and gut our rights then no possible rationalization or weak kneed excuses will win me, let the devil take you if you insist on selling your soul and mine to him anyway.

(13,615 posts)the one that says we need to go back to iraq and kill MORE, and sadly that is the only way to keep that person OUT of OFFICE, to get the finger of the trigger. Then one those kids who were not killed get to grow up and live, perhaps america will see that they do not need to kill, but all those dead because people "voted their conscience in 2000" will not have nay more time to grow up and become young men and women, be they in Bagdad, or New orleans.
Live beats dead any day, whatever it takes. THERE is my conscience. As far as those who thought putting people in harm's way was a way to feed their conscience, well, I do not know how they do it, althought the money that Ralph Nader and Jane Hamsher get paid must ensure they buy excellent matresses.

Fearless
(18,421 posts)If you wish, but it doesn't make it true. You can claim that I'm being misogynistic if you want. I really don't care. I wasn't. I know that. I don't care if you do. You're trying to make this into a fight over which bigotry is stronger and you miss the point.
I will repeat one final time...
It was stated that Hillary was the presumptive nominee.
She was also the presumptive nominee prior to 2004.
She LOST in the primary to Barack Obama.
America chose a black man over Hillary Clinton, the establishment, white, well-known, and SAFE choice.
We as a nation defied racism.
We also decided that the black candidate was better than the white southerner in John Edwards or the white northerner in Joe Biden.
Not everything is an attack on women.

(9,796 posts)I could be misreading this (the format makes it unclear to me) but my impression from that is that she's anti-environmental protections and has a very "stricter punishment is everything" view on crime (which i, at best, simplistic and at worst, downright stupid).

(21,115 posts)8 and 9 may "worry you"....but it still doesnt make her a Republican....or even Republican Lite.....she IS a Progressive no matter what so-called Democrats say
Prophet 451
(9,796 posts)I'm not saying she's a Republican, lite or otherwise and whether she's a progressive depends on how you define the term, it seems to be a personal judgement more than anything.
Personally, I have three big issues: Climate change, LGBT rights and poverty. Clinton is good on LGBT rights these days but her views on climate change and poverty seem lacking to me. But I welcome correction.

If it's Hillary vs Jeb, and the choice is between Dynasty A or Dynasty B, who consider each other to be like family.

(29,503 posts)However, that's what percent of 1% of the US population? For everyone else, they won't care about the Supreme Court. They may no be bothered to vote if Hillary is going to be merely 'not as bad as Jeb', because - among other things - the GOP will outright LIE about Jeb and promise everyone candy canes and rainbows if it will motivate the poor and ignorant to show up, get mad and vote for Jeb.
EndElectoral
(4,213 posts)I also believe she's a lightning rod among Republican Clinton haters and will function as motivation for Republican voters.
Barrack Obama beat her in a primary she should have won. Her record has been since that election one of favoring the corporations more than the common guy. I don't think she's going to appeal to labor, progressives, or the young. She may get a tick up in women voting, but I think she'll also lose moderate men.
Right now if warren isn't running and Sanders is deemed too liberal, and Biden is ostracized continually in the press that a sleeper may emerge such as Democratic Governor who can run as an outside the beltway kind of campaign. Maybe a John Lynch. who was a very popular new Hampshire governor or perhaps someone like Howard Dean may enter the race. However, I believe both will acquiesce to Clinton.
Perhaps Wesley Clark may try and run again. He has the credentials, but hasn't caught on. Needs more donors and a solid financial base, but I think he'd be a good candidate.

(43,865 posts)EndElectoral
(4,213 posts)Every election seems to be about the lesser of two evils and we are reminded of the importance of the SCOTUS issue and it is emphasized as the reason to vote to avoid more Scalias being appointed. Certainly a very salient point, but I don't want to vote for someone based out of fear of what the other party will do. Instead, I want to know what the candidate I vote for will do.
I suppose I am concerned about continuing to vote for excessively corporate friendly candidates over and over again while watching the Democratic Party shift further and further to the right (especially in terms of fiscal policies), and with Hilary I am also concerned about her hawkish speeches. It would be great to have a woman president, but I'm not voting on gender but on issues.
I wonder if more pro-corporate Democratic candidates keep getting the nomination and the party keeps moving right - at what point do progressives step back and say "OK, enough, let the Republicans screw it up and we can run on a much more Progressive platform in response to it next time." Many thought they were getting a progressive in Obama, but he's at best a moderate. A nice man, but a moderate. I've watched in my lifetime the Democratic policies move further and further right each election. One gets angry or one gets apathetic. Many in our party are becoming apathetic because they feel their voices are being drowned out by those strong corporate donors.
I can't say I will or will not vote for Hilary Clinton. I won't vote blindly for her just because she claims to be a Democrat. I'll be listening and watching what her and her opponents say and more importantly do in the coming two years. Only then will I decide.

(2,963 posts)I don't know who the nominee will be. I don't know who will win the election, regardless of who the nominee is.
I do know, though, that we are all far better off with a Democrat - any Democrat - in the White House. I will not caucus for Clinton if she runs, but if she's the nominee, I'll fight to have her elected. The very thought of what the Supreme Court would look like by 2020 after 4 years of a Republican presidency (or worse, by 2024 after 8 years) is enough to make me choose the hold-your-nose approach.
I have ideals, but I also know when to be pragmatic.

(39,215 posts)primary and caucus system. Once we are voting for the general election then issues like the Supreme Court will rule who I vote for. Nothing has changed since our election regarding the dangers to our democracy and our lives. The Rs still want to hand the country over to the corporations. We have to keep that from happening. We have almost lost already.

(23,664 posts)Voted Democratic every time.
Nine times I have voted for what I considered the lesser of two evils:
64: Johnson
68: Humphrey
80: Carter
84: Mondale
88: Dukakis
96: Clinton
00: Gore
04: Kerry
12: Obama
Only four times did I vote for a candidate I was enthused about:
72: McGovern
76: Carter
92: Clinton
08: Obama
Why should 2016 be any different? I have bitched and moaned about Hillary Clinton since 2003 at least and to me she represents everything that is wrong about today's Democratic party. But once again, if she is the candidate, I'll probably fall in line and vote for her. At least then I'll have earned the right to complain about the repub-lite policies she implements.

(143,999 posts)We can not afford to let a republican president select the next three or four SCOTUS justices. We have already lost a significant amount of the Voting Rights Act in the Shelby County case and the rest of the VRA is vulnerable. Roberts has been working to gut the VRA since he was a baby attorney in the Reagan DOJ.
Reproductive rights are on the table. We have a number of key battles coming up including possible personhood amendments, TRAP law (targeted regulations against abortion providers) and 20 week abortion caps. The lost of even one Democratic judge or the retirement of Kennedy and the replacement of such judge with an Alito or Roberts type would be a disaster.

(13,615 posts)I will vote for her, but I will ensure that all the centre right people learen on day one that I am not theirs. The Pumas started flaying at Obama from the first second, I will at Hillary, namely to ensure she either dips to the left, or resigns. Hillary and Wall Street can rig the casino, but that does not mean they will win the game, namely because, unlike Obama, people's patience for supporting someone because they claim to be a Democrat will have long been exhausted, no matter how many times her supporters will accuse anyone not kowtowing to her of being a (insert insult here.)

(37,428 posts)I think Clinton would go along to get along. With Wall Street, if we don't force her to hear some different voices.

(45,251 posts)announced is beyond me. If you really don't want Hillary to be the nominee, you are not serving your own purposes.

(12,081 posts)Well as far as I'm concerned economic justice is just as important as social justice and I will not vote for a democrat who will not fight for economic justice. You cannot have social justice without economic justice. No justice. No peace.

(15,512 posts)and I'm not sure she was ready either but now it's eight years later and if Barack keeps hitting homers I think she'll do fine in the general and in the WH. One term for sure and she might surprise us all and get reelected.

(16,191 posts)If Americans are so dumb that they want us to choose between two right wing candidates, then the nation deserves whatever ugly fate comes from that decision. I won't endorse it with my vote.
Clinton is on the wrong side of every political issue that is important to me. I won't vote against my own self interests so that Democratic centrists can maintain power.
There will be plenty of other races that I can focus my time and energy on.

(7,099 posts)Vote for our shit candidate now and by golly next time we're gonna get a progressive! I've listened to, and went along with, that sales pitch too many times now.
If you like Clinton, great. I respect that. If you only vote for her because you're scared of not voting for her, I don't respect that. As for me, my vote is no longer to be won by emotional blackmail, promises of fixing the party later, or any other form of the tired gimmicks the center-right bloc employs to get liberals to vote for them.

Republicans are horrible, they will take every rights away from poor people and we do not want that.

(5,700 posts)for her. She is still better as a Democrat as opposed to a Republican. Do not cut your nose to spite your face if Hilary is the nominee! Enough said.
I kinda feel she is getting old and might make mistakes plus she is for upper class not the working class. Yet again, you all will be faced with the lesser of two evils. What happened to Dean and Kuch? Are they not in the runnings?

(9,796 posts)No, I mean I literally can't vote. I'm British. However, if she's the nominee, I will encourage my many American friends to vote for her. She's nowhere near as liberal as I'd like but at this point, it's either Democratic or a Fascist theocracy.

(5,700 posts)vote for the democratic candidate, otherwise, a useless republican will get elected and spend the next frigging eight years of undoing the good that President Obama has accomplished.
Regardless if Hilary Clinton is the nominee, democrats have to vote for her. Personally, I do not find that she is inevitable since you all do not believe in a dynasty. Is there not another democrat who is capable of being a President rather than Hilary? It is no longer a lesser of two evils, it is now a matter of keeping the American working class to survive. The middle class is losing ground and the rich is getting richer no matter who is the President, that I do not understand!
It is amazing that a country with such a huge population only have two main parties. One who wants you to pull yourself with your bootstraps and the other party is not that different. Boggles my mind!
