MARK DAVIS/THE WORLD-HERALD
George on a recent trip to the field behind our home for a walk and a sniff. He still wants to go outside, but his walks, which used to average a mile, now consists of short treks around the yard.

Column by Mark Davis / World-Herald staff writer

This was the first year since moving into our little house on the east side of the river a dozen years ago that I missed the Iowa shotgun deer season.

And I haven’t been out once for pheasant or waterfowl. Or ice fishing. Or even bird watching.

All I can do is sit and wait.

My best friend and roommate for the past 13-plus years is old and sick. And I plan to stay by his side until the end.

MARK DAVIS/THE WORLD-HERALD

George enjoys a walk shortly after joining the family in October of 2001.

My own heartbreak is in process as my now gray-faced girl lays at my feet. She is 12 and needs to be carried up and down stairs due to arthritis. This is the most precious time we spend with our furry family members.
