This bit is one of the best compact explanations I have ever heard about the differences in the way people respond to, and are treated by, the police based on the color of their skin.

(2,969 posts)I'm white, and even without being specifically told, I absorbed the feeling that authorities are there to serve me, and project that in my rare interactions with them. When I've felt like they weren't serving me, I've projected a sense of calm outrage. It's nothing conscious - just the way I react. And they generally respect that attitude, and seem to agree that yes, they are there to serve me. But I know from having seen black-white interactions that a black guy reacting the same way to a white cop would be treated as a hostile suspect and might face violence.
