College hunt looms for first daughter Malia Obama

Soon first daughter Malia Obama will be the decider, choosing which colleges to apply to and which one to attend beginning in the fall of 2016, as her father's presidency winds down.

She wants to be a filmmaker, the president has said. Last summer news outlets said his 16-year-old daughter toured two northern California rivals: Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley.

UC Berkeley, the state's flagship public university, is known as a liberal enclave, and it has a Department of Film & Media.

Stanford, a private university whose Palo Alto campus features towering palm trees, is more buttoned-down and boasts alumnae including first daughter Chelsea Clinton and Supreme Court justices such as the retired Sandra Day O'Connor. Obama's commerce secretary, Penny Pritzker, is from Stanford — and like the first lady and the Obama daughters, is also from Chicago.

At Stanford, students can major or minor in film and media studies. Malia Obama is known as an athlete, especially at tennis, so she might be a good fit in "Nerd Nation," the unofficial nickname for the school's sports fans.

it is safe to say she will not graduate with crippling debt that will haunt her the rest of her days. I am sure she is a very smart young woman and will choose well.

According to what I've read, most of his student loan was about $50K for Harvard law.

The Obamas "had an adjusted gross income of $207,647 in 2004, $1,655,106 in 2005, and $983,826 in 2006."

If they just closed their student loan debt last year, I have no idea why. They had the money to close it long ago.

I looked on wiki because its easy. He's had lots of education and did lots of very expensive moves over his different colleges. Looks like he traveled home for summers from college to work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama#Early_life_and_career

After high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles in 1979 to attend Occidental College . In February 1981, Obama made his first public speech, calling for Occidental to participate in the disinvestment from South Africa in response to that nation's policy of apartheid.[26] In mid-1981, Obama traveled to Indonesia to visit his mother and half-sister Maya, and visited the families of college friends in Pakistan and India for three weeks.[26] Later in 1981, he transferred as a junior to Columbia College, Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science with a specialty in international relations[27] and lived off-campus on West 109th Street.[28]

Obama entered Harvard Law School in the fall of 1988. He was selected as an editor of the Harvard Law Review at the end of his first year,[40] president of the journal in his second year,[34][41] and research assistant to the constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe while at Harvard for two years.[42] During his summers, he returned to Chicago, where he worked as an associate at the law firms of Sidley Austin in 1989 and Hopkins & Sutter in 1990.[43] After graduating with a J.D. magna cum laude[44] from Harvard in 1991, he returned to Chicago.

I'm not sure how a Fellowship to "work on his book" works in the following Law school, are they paid a lot or what?.

In 1991, Obama accepted a two-year position as Visiting Law and Government Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School to work on his first book.[45][46] He then taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years, first as a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996, and then as a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004.

From April to October 1992, Obama directed Illinois's Project Vote, a voter registration campaign with ten staffers and seven hundred volunteer registrars; it achieved its goal of registering 150,000 of 400,000 unregistered African Americans in the state, leading Crain's Chicago Business to name Obama to its 1993 list of "40 under Forty" powers to be.[48]

He joined Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, a 13-attorney law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development, where he was an associate for three years from 1993 to 1996, then of counsel from 1996 to 2004. His law license became inactive in 2007.[49][50]

From 1994 to 2002, Obama served on the boards of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago, which in 1985 had been the first foundation to fund the Developing Communities Project, and of the Joyce Foundation.[31] He served on the board of directors of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge from 1995 to 2002, as founding president and chairman of the board of directors from 1995 to 1999.[31]

And considering that his wife also had highly renumerative employment for a lot of that time as well, I just wonder why he couldn't pay off his student loans until last year if as reported, they were only in the neighborhood of $50K. That's about $2500 a year plus interest.

And since about 2004 at least they've been in the top 1%, with Obama alone making over $200K. I believe he could have paid it whatever balance remained since he left law school rather easily if he'd cared to, so I can only guess that it wasn't a priority.

Great films will be springing up all over the place.

An important factor limiting independent films used to be the cost of film itself. Quality 35mm equipment and film are ferociously expensive. 16mm film is still expensive, good enough for television, some sorts of art, but not for general cinema. Digital changes all that. The "industry" is about to be challenged by digital production just as the music industry was.

In any case, if Malia hasn't already created a few excellent "films" she's not going to be accepted to USC, UCLA, or NYU film schools. The competition is fierce. And it doesn't really matter anyways. Her name alone gives her the connections and exposure USC and UCLA film students seek.

I know we used to ridicule the Bush daughters for their drunken / party antics, but i learned a lot, about a lot more than just what classes i was taking in college.

Good Luck Malia, and enjoy your college years. Even today, i still think of some of the things i did in college and enjoyed as part of the best time of my life.

Like it's a bad thing if someone would say "I'm not going to go at this time, I'm taking a two year break after HS." The world would stop spinning.
