Oregon Sheriff Openly Refused to Enforce New Gun Laws After Sandy Hook

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin sounds just like the other sheriffs we see on television and elsewhere, swaggering and full of hubris.

After the Sandy Hook shooting, Hanlin wrote a letter to Vice President Biden stating his unequivocal refusal to enforce any so-called "unconstitutional gun laws."

He wrote, "I fully agree with the statement made by Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller in a recent letter he sent you. He stated, "In the wake of recent criminal events, politicians are attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims by advocating for laws that would prevent honest, law abiding Americans from possessing certain firearms and ammunition magazines. We are Americans. We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe on the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws.'"

Hanlin continued, "I will NOT violate my Constitutional Oath. Therefore, the second purpose of this letter is to make notification that any federal regulation enacted by Congress or by executive order of the President offending the Constitutional rights of my citizens shall not be enforced by me or by my deputies..."

The letter Hanlin refers to by Sheriff Mueller was part of an action urged by Richard Mack and undertaken by sheriffs all over the country. It was an NRA/Gun Owners of America effort to push back on any legislation -- any at all -- in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]A very personable service provider was here today about some work on our buildings and before he left, we somehow got into a discussion on gun control.

He's very pro-gun but very, very pro-regulation. He compared gun ownership to driving a car - as a privilege rather than a universal right. He believes any potential gun owner should have a background check, mandatory training regarding the law and safe use of guns, pass written and practical exams, pass medical/psych requirements, and be subject to reevaluation at the discretion of any doctor or after any infraction.

I found myself agreeing with him on just about everything except the fact that he doesn't think any type of gun should be excluded for qualified owners.

Of course, I still hate guns in general. Can't help it, since they cause so much misery, but at least his point of view regarding training and licensing makes good sense. People like that sheriff make me sick.

There are a whole bunch of renegade sheriffs in Upstate NY who agree. It could be happening in my home town or a school near me.

This little king-sheriff wants to decide what laws to enforce much the same way Kim Davis gets to decide who gets married. John Hanlin's crookedness makes one ask what authority--moral or otherwise--does this king-sheriff have to enforce any laws? The only action of this king-sheriff is that he won't state the killer's name. Who gives a f- -k? Too little too late, king-sheriff.

Obviously the man was irrelevant in stopping this shooting, yet like Kim Davis he's paid to help. Can we trust that he did everything he could? Maybe it would be better to just do your job, king-sheriff, and STFU!

Oh what a tangled web we weave,

When first we practice to deceive!

Yesterday? If not he was a "law abiding gun owner" right up until the moment he wasn't. Pretty hard to prevent with present laws.

I would make mental health record and prescription reporting mandatory, any flag from a mental health professional and any prescriptions for mental health drugs and they become a prohibited person.
